Will be interviewing with a State Agency in WA and wonder if anyone has any interview tips to offer? Also, I am wondering if I do get the job, will I still be able to negotiate salary, benefit package such as asking for more vacation days etc like for a job in private sector? The position was posted with a salary range so I will be sticking to that. Thanks!

Typically you will be interviewed by a group of 3-4 people, the hiring manager, 1-2 others that you would be working with, and someone from HR as a moderator. In an effort to treat all candidates the same, there will usually be set questions, and the interviewers just take turns asking them. Follow-ups are minimal. With public agencies having a different corporate culture, it may be helpful for you to have some knowledge about such things as the state auditor, public disclosure, and the priorities of the elected officials.
Except for top management positions, salary classifications, benefits and pay ranges are set by the elected governing body. In our case there can be some negotiation between the bottom and middle of the range, but no one can start above the mid point. No one can negotiate benefits including vacation days.
