This is what the HR lady said to me today about the position I'm applying for (and that I asked about wrt negotiating PTO). I have my final interview on Monday with two direct supervisors above me. I have to figure that this position is pretty much mine to lose, right? They were very candid about their process and I am the only one who made it to the final round. Fingers crossed, and I certainly don't intend on acting like I got the job when I interview, but at the same time, I can't help but to be a little excited.
Yup, that is definitely a really positive sign. I find I have good odds when they mention, even casually, an offer is forthcoming or say "you are hired!"

Well.
I've had offers pulled before, so nothing is written in stone. I have reneged on a verbal to start a job as well.
If you have yet to meet two of your direct supervisors, why would they have offered you the job already?
I'm a particularly cautious person, but I don't even feel safe when I have the offer letter in hand. When I walk into the place on my start date I feel confident I'll have a job ... for a little while at least.

Dumb thing for an HR person to say, if she is not making the decision, because it can get your hopes up for a letdown. Good luck, and I hope you get it, but nothing's sure until you have an offer.

I know what you mean. I feel safe when I get business cards.
It always feels tenuous before then.
I have a preference for smaller companies, so the whole dealing with HR thing feels equally foreign. I like it when things are transitioned to the hiring manager in the later stages of the process.
