I am a sales rep at a mobile communications company in a retail setting. I recently sat with district manager and regional manager talk about moving into management they told me about assistant manager job and how would I like it.

They mentioned many different career paths past managers have gone through and thought I might be one of those upward mobility types based on sales results.

Now I know sales reps going to management take pay cuts however; what is an appropriate way to counter an offer that might be too low for me to accept.

Managers work longer hours handle lots more stress.

I currently make 30k base plus overtime.

The job has a salary range from 25k-42k base plus overtime.

I would be comfortable around 39-40k range but do not know realistically what will the offer be I talked to others and it seems longer you are sales rep lower salary you offered

e.g.

Sales rep for 1.3 years promoted to assistant offered 36k
Sales rep for 5.1 years promoted to assistant offered 33k

Any advice?

You aren't a HIGHLY successful sales rep if you're making 30k a year...

I did not disclose commission for purposes of excluding that of the subject matter.

The appropriate way to counter any offer - regardless of whether it is sales to management - is to justify why you deserve the salary you are requesting. NOT why you need the money. What you will offer for the company that deserves the extra money you want.

Of course, it's best to wait for the offer and see if you need to counter it.

I got the offer today. They said I would have to write a justification letter.

This is hilarious. Do you think you own this place and a mod is going to woken up at 3am because you are having a hissy fit about deleting a thread where you made yourself look like a total fool, and then bump the thread several times to the top of the page? Instant delete? Give me a break!

They don't delete threads, so stop asking for it, just don't post again. Congrats on your raise.
