Hi all. I have a question about an internal position I tried out for a month ago. After working at one department for over five years and developing a reputation for being a top performer, I became interested in a different, but related type of work in the same company. I saw an opening on the HR website and tracked down the person who is vacating the position (relocation was the reason) and I feel like I did all of my due diligence in researching the new role. I submitted an application for it, and though I understand it was a really competitive position (50+ people from inside and outside company applied), I managed to get through a phone interview, informal interview with the hiring manager, and this week I attended the in-person interview with said manager.

Overall I know I didn't do perfectly at my interview but I felt like based on my pleasant demeanor, demonstrated enthusiasm in the role, and technical knowledge about the products I would be covering (having worked with them extensively in my current role), the impression I gave to the hiring manager was a net positive. And I guess it didn't hurt that my boss has been really supportive of my career goals and my pursuit of this job (he put in a good word for me to the hiring manager). I am definitely prepared for the possibility that I will not get this transfer and I think it will be ok because my boss told me that I might get to gain some of the skills I would learn in the other job if I remained with his team.

So the interview was on Wednesday and I was told to check back on Monday. Yesterday afternoon (friday) I got an email from the hiring manager's boss (whom I have not met) asking to talk on the phone with me regarding the position. I'm hoping that this is a good sign because I figure if I'm no longer in the running I would not hear anything at least until Monday, even if I am internal. At this point, I'm mostly wondering where you guys think I stand in the process. Is it down to me and somebody else, and the higher-up wants to narrow down based on a second interview? Or is it that I've basically got the job, and the guy just wanted to make sure they weren't making the wrong decision by having me talk to him? Just wondering how close I am at this point.

Also, in the email I received, he said he was hoping to talk to me the same day or next week, so I gave him my phone number and said I was available to talk either immediately or Monday if he preferred. He didn't actually end up calling, so do you think he still wants to, just next week? Should I be concerned that he didn't call after I sent him he email reply? It was getting kind of late as he was 2 hours ahead of me so I'm hoping he just decided to wait until Monday, an not that he changed his mind about wanting to talk to me or anything. Assuming I don't hear from him for the remainder of the weekend (likely scenario), should I email him again on Monday to tell him I'm still interested and available to talk?

Anyway, any thoughts would be appreciated. It's been three weeks already in this process, and in a way, positive or negative it would be great to get it resolved. For sure I would prefer to actually get the job though! Thanks!

I know how anxiety plays a part in wanting to know the thoughts of strangers on a forum - but the truth is, we're only guessing. Does it sound good? Sure. Could it also mean you didn't get it and as a courtesy to someone internally they want to let you know by phone or in person? Sure.

The best advice I can give you is to try and forget about it and keep busy over the weekend doing something else or you'll drive yourself crazy and rob yourself of a relaxing weekend.

Good luck - I hope you get it!

Thanks. I'm just gonna try to keep myself distracted over the weekend and hope for the best. But basically, since I already replied to the email message I've done my part right?

Yes, you've done your part, you've done all that you can, so now do something else. Thinking about it won't give you an answer, nor will it get you the job.

They are going to offer the position, the phone call is to give you what they expect from you in the role and what the role is about, and of course, to ask you whether or not you are still interested in it. I'm transferring to a new position in a different department as well on Monday. Congrats and good luck.

And how do you know this with such certainty?

Like any comment, it is an opinion. We will see what happens.

Thanks for the opinion. So do you guys think I'm likely past the intense-grilling part of the process, or is there more coming? I'm prepared for it either way but it would be nice if I can relax a bit more now.

It would be smart to be prepared for more questions, just in case.

yeah for sure, I have some specific points I didn't get to express in the first interview that I want to get out there if given the opportunity, to try to seal the deal.
