Chicago was definitely bad in my profession from 2008-2012 and still isn't up to par which I attribute to how poorly run the state is. I haven't really been looking lately so I can't say how much better it is. Pharma is still a basket-case so I'd imagine it is still not a great time to be a science worker and with the h1b free for all that congress is pushing I'm sure things will get worse for STEM professionals.
My husband and I are self employed but I have been looking for a part job administrative office job just entry level type for months. I havent seen many and those iv seen have applied to. I live in a small town and am not wanting a long commute so I am a bit picky also. Overall though, its been tough.
im surprised that im seeing much more full time work then part time right now.
Upstate New York is a basket case and jobs are hard to find here.
In any case the US unemployment rate exceed 10% in April 2015, but it will probably improve eventually.
Since summer 2008, the local employment market has become slow, flooded, and competitive. Jobs are still really hard to find and come by that, when you find one, you better hold on to it. Well, I have found IT jobs and I do apply for them, but there are still 500+ applicants for those IT positions I end up competing against and I give up. I'm grateful I got a FT job working the overnight shift in a warehouse 2+ years ago, and this job has 401K, PTO, paid holidays, paid vacations, health insurance, etc., and I'm still there. The only jobs that's in my town are part time like retail, fast food, health care, etc., and offer no benefits so I'm a very lucky one. At least I have a job and not out there causing more crime problems for the city I live in so I can't complain.
