Hello,
I plan to relocate to another state in 6 mo. My question is when should I start to send out my resume for a job. I can't leave until after May 2017 otherwise I would forfeit the company match in my 401k. And I don't want to leave without first having a job. I don't want to start too soon and not be able to accept an offer should a company decide to make one.
Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

Well when i wanted to move out of my state, i had a goal in mind of a time. I put mine out about 60 days advance. Give them plenty of time to make a decision, time for me to scout out a place that fits the budget, and guess work on how to move my stuff. Just be ready to drive alot, and if you get more than one job interview, setup a hotel for a few days just incase they do a call back or you have a few lined up. Wouldn't drive or fly just for one interview unless it is very promising and a job you want. Check for relocation fees if they can offer it. But answer your question, i say about 2 months before you plan the move, shoot for 3 to test the waters.

Part of the answer depends on the job/industry. Some hire quickly while some take many months.

Well it's in the healthcare industry. I also have to find a place to live, so I figured that I would get the job first then the place next. Not sure how long it would take to get moved. I'm currently sorting things for charity and researching company information. Hopefully I will be able to find something comparable to the job that I currently have.
