when you have the necessary experience and education to get promotions.. really depends on the field you are in. I did the best in my mid 20's as far as raises/promotions because i was much more ambitious; now i've just settled in and don't really care about raises and such anymore. It depends on your own goals and what type of effort you want to put in.
In my experience, 10 years of relatable experience was enough to easily land jobs in my field..
