So I have been in other threads getting great information from others in regards to this issue but I've still not quite figured this out. Over the past year I have been trying to make my escape out of sales and metric based work into something different. So far unsuccessful. I've grown tired of the numbers, the pressure, and the lack of growth opportunities. It seems from what many have told me and through some of my own research that the main issue I face is trying to justify to employers that my experience does translate into other areas. Some argue that my advanced sales experience isnt advanced at all, and doesnt meet the requirements for a mid level job? Im at a place now where I have too many responsibilities in my life and at home to take a major hit on what little salary I do have and start from rock bottom. Ive hit the glass ceiling at my current job and they have affirmed more than once that change is not anywhere in the near future for anyone.

Has anyone here successfully turned a long career in sales into a non sales/metric based job? And done so without starting from the very bottom?

I have not, but I have seen it done. In the software development world I have seen sales folks transition into product management. Bringing all their knowledge of what customers are asking for in the product to the table. Not sure what industry you are in, but that's pretty widely applicable where you can turn all the product knowledge you've gained into a product development opportunity.

Thats just what I am looking to get into. I cant seem to get any of the companies I have applied to give me a chance or even call me for an interview. Are there any job titles that you might be able to suggest that could help my search? I still think that the right company is out there and maybe I just dont know who they are.

That type of transition is likely one done best at your current employer after you've demonstrated knowledge of their product rather than trying to make that jump off the bat at a brand new place.

Right. There lies the issue with my situation. The industry (profit eduation) that I work in and the company I work for, does not permit for such growth. In fact many people here are loosing their titles to lower positions and many good people are being phased out for no good reason. This is the second company in 5 years where I have had to deal with this. In both instances things changed within about 2 years and many in the industry have accepted this as the norm somewhat. All the honest institutions that invest in their people are dead. That has been my main motivation this year to find a way out of the industry for good.

Bump.

Still looking for insights here. So far Ive not really found anything positive which is not very encouraging. Most of the feedback ive received has just further confirmed that my degree and 12 years of job history is 100% worthless. I truly dont know where to go from here. Some have suggested starting over from the bottom but I dont know how I could see taking a major pay cut and making my family suffer for this even though they are part of the motivation? That kind of financial damage could cripple me. Very tough place to be in right now but I feel like someone out here has experienced what Im going through and knows of a way to find what Im looking for.

I moved from sales into sales management and then into operations. It can be done but along the way you need to start picking up additional certs and training that can make you more knowledgeable and more marketable.

What kinds of certs to you reccommend? So far all I keep seeing is people looking for SEO experience but its a bit confusing if there is an actual cert for it. I understand how SEO works , and how to apply it to the business so why do I need a cert to explain it?

Perhaps it's because employers need some solid proof that you can do it and you do understand how SEO works. It's hard to understand something that you can't see.

Your experience isn’t very transferable outside your industry. You need to pick up transferable
skills in your current industry. Applying into net new roles and net new industries at the same time probably won’t happen. You are better off moving into sales in a different industry as a first step.
