I used to think that, but apparently it is not true, as has been made clear in a case in our community which a bais din is still in the process of resolving. The fellow involved actually has TWO Jewish grandparents on his mother's side, and still has a question or two pending, which have to go the right way. Don't ask me for details, because I don't understand them well enough to reproduce them accurately, but most likely your local orthodox rabbi can give you some of the general principles. I think it involves "Yoshkeh."
