I tried several searches on newspaperarchive.com and could not find this. What did you use for a search criteria?

Wentworth Military Academy and College in Lexington is going out of business at the end of May. Wentworth has been around since 1880.

I wondered if Wentworth was closing how was the other military school in Missouri doing. Come to find out Kemper Military School and College in Mexico went out in 2003. It had been around since well before the Civil War.

Wikepedia says that Kemper was the Animal House movie producers first choice for shooting the film back in 1978, or so. The school turned them down. They finally filmed at the University of Oregon.

The tuition and fees at Wentworth was $27,000 per year. Choke. I guess I am still living in the 60s when I attended what is now the University of Central Missouri. There was no tuition and my fees, books, and room and board in a dormitory amounted to $750 per year.

A lack of public funds terminated the case:

From the Examiner of 100 years ago this week.

Dr. B. Clark Hyde, son-in-law of Mrs. Logan O. Swope, and for seven years charged with the murder of Colonel Thomas H. Swope, now is a free man. The case, one of the greatest in the history of Jackson County criminal court, was dismissed. This was done after Hunt C. Moore, county prosecutor, had told the court he was powerless to prosecute the case further, on account of lack of funds. For awhile Hyde was held as an actual prisoner in the county jail in Kansas City, but later he was released under a heavy bond, and for several years he has been free except as to the murder charge. But now his is absolutely free.

You should read the book "Deaths on Pleasant Street" to learn all the grisly details.

There were two or more orchards in the area of Independence. What fruit did each one grow and where were Parker's Orchard and Brown's Orchard located? I know the fruits and I recall the location of one, but the other has me a bit puzzled. What say you?
