Dixon Evening Telegraph, Dixon, Illinois, December 18, 1939

Another article indicates a grain elevator.

The location could have been the May Grain and Coal on south Liberty.

Here is the 1952 picture of the Lake City Team, which my father played for.
Dad started out as a bat boy for the Ace of Clubs in the late 30's. I believe he told me that at that particular time both Mort and Walker Cooper played for them. They played on a field near the old Hilltop School for Girls.

The team was formed in 1929. I have not found any mention when it went out. Newspaper mentions of the team has the name of the team as the "Ace o' Clubs" baseball team, which apparently means "Ace of the Clubs" as in 4 o'clock (of the clock).
I knew Merv Fields. His son, Paul, was a bowling teammate (Strike n Spare, Maywood). I never played baseball with him as he was older (VH '67 I think) so he was always a division ahead. They lived near Rockwood CC. Last I remember Merv, he was a long time employee @ A&P, was as Produce Manager at the store on 47th/Blue Ridge (whatever small shopping center that was). Late 60s or early 70s. I believe Paul might have played ball at Mo. Valley.

Unfortunately, I don't recognize any names from this photo. Was the Cooper of Mort & Walker fame? If so, my Mom might have known him as she spoke often of the Cooper boys.

Correct-a-mundo

Alton Plaza had stores that flip flopped in order vs 24 Hiway Shopping Center. There Kroger and TG&Y were on the East side, along River.

"I believe Plaza Hardware was one of the original tenants of the Alton Plaza shopping area that opened west of Crysler on the block between Forest and Norton in the early fifties. Advertisements in the Kansas City paper run from 1954 through 1973."

That is true. I had forgotten over the years that Plaza also had the gift shop next door, until 1955, when my parents bought it. I realized this after researching the tenants in Alton Plaza in Polk's, that there was a Plaza Gift Shop at 11720. That jibes with my earliest childhood recollection . . . sitting around while they moved into the store. The fixtures were already in place, and that recollection includes a box of candy that the Kettlewells (who owned Hardware also) left under one of the counters. I hated the taste but it was candy, and I was bored sitting around all day while my parents worked.

1954 sounds about right as a starting point for AP. I'll have to check my notes.

I am relatively certain that the manager Bob Cooper in the L.C. picture is the R.J. Cooper in the above article. Dad told me that Bob Cooper only had one arm, apparently loosing it in a farm accident. He said he could still play better than most with 2 arms.
