We had some discussion several pages back in August 2013 and I and Mad Anthonie agreed that this was the Main Street side of the 1838 courthouse.

According to the book Lost Souls of the Lost Township, this is a south or Lexington Street view.

This painting, by the way, was made by a German tourist in 1852 and was published in a book by a Leipzig, Germany, publishing firm. It is the only original depiction in existence of the 1838 courthouse.

Here is a hint: The number 326+ has everything to do with this.
Here is another hint. It is located in Independence, Missouri.

That view actually makes more sense, once I contemplated and analyzed it. That is the central portion of the existing courthouse, with east and west wings added to it later.

Here is an interesting 1916 look at the two cemeteries on Noland Road before they merged.

Hayward Street is now part of Woodlawn.

The unmarked streets running north from Sea to Hayward are Hocker, Emery, and Leslie. The north part of Emery is now part of Woodlawn along with the block marked 206. Leslie marked the east city limit but stopped at the cemetery. It now runs through going past Benton School in the next block.

North-south High Street fronted on both cemeteries but is now part of Woodlawn.

Noland Road is shown just to the west of High but ends in the north at Short Street (out of the picture) and takes up again at Walnut.

I am not sure if this has been talked about or not, but wanted to share!

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A quarter-of-a-million dollar townhomes are being built in downtown Independence. The construction for the townhomes is underway, near Truman and Main Streets. The developer describes the new townhomes as "first-class living."

"Those people would be more likely to come and eat meals here and get some more products that are locally made," said Trevor Banhart, who works at Main Street Coffee and is excited the townhomes could bring in more people to the city.

The two-story, two-car garage townhomes will be for sale for $250,000 each. They sit on a corner that was at one time a parking lot for the city's farmer's market. Development group Market Square LLC owns the property and more than a dozen others on the square. Owner Ken McClain said the property will have a home owners association. He told FOX 4 he has been involved in reviving the square for 18 years and this is the next step.

Some people who live in the area said they think the townhomes won't fit in.

"This is an older neighborhood with lots of great older shops," said Billie Howard.

The townhomes will have two or three bedrooms. McClain said depending on the weather the townhomes will be complete in 12 to 14 months.

I drove past them today, the foundations are started from the east end of the block, but nothing yet on the west.

What is this? What is it for? What does it do? Where is it? When was it put there?

Clues
1. The number 326+ has everything to do with this.
2. It is located in Independence, Missouri.
3. There is an indirect connection to the 38th largest city in Missouri.

The other location for Jackson County Sheriff detention cells was 1030 s Crysler after the Sheriff's office moved from the courthouse.

All three Jackson County Jails in Independence were in the vicinity of Main and Truman.

The second jail was on the corner of Main and Truman and when the third jail (1859) was built next door south, the building became a slave auction house operated by an African-American. After the Civil War the building became the Independence City jail.

A Jackson County Courthouse annex was built on west Kansas Street in 1957. This was an annex to the courthouse on the square. I don’t recall the original cost of the courthouse annex but it was probably less than $1m.

In the years since 1957, the annex has increased in size a few times and its mission has grown sufficiently that, today, it is known as the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse.

The courthouse on the square is termed the Truman Courthouse.

The courthouse of 1827 is also on west Kansas street.

At any rate, the courthouse annex on Kansas Street was not the first time a Jackson County Courthouse annex was built in Independence.

Where and when was the previous annex built and at what cost to the taxpayer?
