Tonganoxie is a nice ex-urban town that has basic neighborhood needs, a very nice surrounding countryside, and that is convenient to both Lawrence and Kansas City (especially the Village West retail/entertainment area). They have at least one grocery store, fast food, and a historic small-town downtown. New housing continues to go up, but there's also a small cluster of older homes that form the original town. I-70 is fairly convenient, but I do believe you have to pay a toll when using it from the new-ish Tonganoxie-area interchange.

It is a small, rural town that has had a lot of new housing built over the past 10 years. People move out from the Kansas City metro area because housing is cheaper. Most flock back to the city for shopping, work, restaurants, etc. As a result, the town doesn't have much for restaurants or shopping. Although the town is relatively small, the surrounding countryside has a lot of rural housing as well. The rural influence in the town is rather unique and the core of the families who have been in the area for a long time know each other well. It has become, or is becoming, a bedroom community for many who work in Kansas City or other nearby cities.

There's old "Tongie" and then there's Tonganoxie. Not a bad place to live, probably more working class than some of the other neighborhoods around there, but good quality family type place.
