And you won't find a better bang for your housing dollar than here. I would get here quick! And the bonus is that there are lots of sunny days here--great for a CA transplant!!
I'd say "ideal" if you're conservative, religious, and think Applebees and Jack Stack are fine dining. Or if you enjoy mowing an acre of grass in intense heat and humidity. Or if your idea of urban development is when they build a new Fazzoli's in the mall parking lot.

I know that Overland Park is sort of a corporate "edge city," or a suburban business area. I've heard lots of good things about it. However, with these new areas, you also get a lot of "vanilla" (blandness) that some don't like. There are a lot of reasons to leave California right now...in fact, because of the population growth (now 37 million, 14 million when I was a kid) and some very deep-rooted problems, it may become a land of "have and have nots" and it's golden era may be over. With these successive waves of problems, I know Californians who have moved to the N.W., the S.E., or New England and the only thing they miss is that dry summer with the cool nights...and that's about it.

Overland Park is an extreme anomaly in Kansas. The city itself and JOCO have absolutely nothing in common with the rest of the state. However, JOCO is not great for single people, although it does have a better than average diversified economy.

Your remarks are rude and condenscending to those of us that live in Johnson County. It's one thing to comment on the weather, but quite another to portray us as small minded simpletons and stereotype us as "conservative and religious" based on our zip codes. Shame on you!

My apologies Smellykat! I didn't say anything about people in OP being simpletons or small minded, although that pretty much sums up my family there. I know/have known liberal and gay people living there, but they're in the minority. I could just never be happy living there again, and you can't deny that JoCo is conservative and overall, rather right-wing religious.

Smile Hi Californian

We lived in Overland Park from 1991 to 1995--it was a fantastic place to live. From there, we moved to Atlanta, then to the San Francisco area (which was great and in 2003 unfortunately, to New Jersey. I am now in a position to relocate anywhere and I am moving back to Overland Park in July 2009 and can't wait. The Blue Valley schools are fantastic--my daughter will be a freshman in high school. Overland Park has something for everyone--kids sports, adult sports (tennis and golf, a trail for walking and biking), great shopping, fantastic restaurants, and in Missouri, the Royals and the Chiefs, Country Club Plaza--the list goes on and on. It is very clean, upscale and one of the best kept secrets in the country. I hope this helps you in your decision.

I think you'll love Overland Park! I love the area bordered by 119th and 151st, Mission Road and Metcalf.

I am curious if you are still moving. We are contemplating a move to Overland Park for work - are from San Francisco and currently live in Chicago. Would love to find out if you decided to move/or not and why.

I know the schools are very good, there is very little crime, the weather is mild, etc. etc. I know all that. But, I'd like to hear from people that have relocated to OP from other states, but especially from CA. Also, I lived in Prairie Village for about 3 years when I was young (5-7 yrs old) and I loved it there. I was pretty bummed when we moved back to CA. Now that I am 36 and have my own family, I'd like to see if anything has changed for the better or worse over the years. Once again, if you have moved to OP from another state or from CA, please let me know what you think of the area.

Thanks
I think you'll like it. My wife & I just moved to Overland Park (we're near 119th and Highway 69) and we like it a lot. Much more to do than in northern Arizona where we moved from.

I'm curious too. Just don't listen to the hateful, closed-minded bigotry of the leftwing liberals like one of the other posters on this thread.

We lived in OP for about 3 years, and now we live in Connecticut. I LOVED southern OP (south of 119th) and deeply regret moving back to the east coast (where we are from.) The cost of your home will be much lower in OP, and it is an ideal place to raise a family. Great shopping, great restaurants, great schools, and all close and convenient to get to. We are considering moving ourselves back there since my husband works from home and we can live anywhere. Compared to the east coast (I've never been to CA) it is much more friendly, and although it is an expensive area compared to other midwest towns, I don't think people are as materialistic as they are on the east coast. Hope this helps and good luck!
