WOW -- 76? I think weatherizing your home would be a great investment! Ours has been set at 65 or 66, even on the coldest days, and we're pretty toasty here. We have casement windows, which seal out the weather really well, but I don't care for them in the spring when I want to open them -- the wind pulled one off last year. We are in a semi-rural area and don't get protection from windbreaks or other houses, so we would really be cold if our house wasn't sealed as well as it is.

I don't understand it either, but it does. We keep the thermostat at 65-66 in the winter, but we'd freeze to death if we kept it there in the summer. We turn it up to 72-74 in the summer and we're perfectly comfortable. On extremely hot summer nights, we might turn it down to 70, but never lower than that.

^ for the same reasons 50 degrees feels pleasant in the winter after a long cold snap but 60 feels freezing in the summer. As your body adapts to colder weather your capilaries and pores shrink. Women are also more sensative to the cold as their body is designed to protect a baby. Their body keeps the core warmer than men and the extremities tend to get cold more easily.

Women also suffer much more frequently than men from anemia, which is one of several blood/circulation disorders that causes increased cold sensitivity and coldness in the extremities. My fingers and toes freeze even in the summer due to anemia.
