Most Affordable Places to Buy a Home

Rankings were determined by dividing home sale prices by median household income. They list both the 20 most affordable places and the 20 least affordable places.

Note that many of the least affordable places have relatively high incomes. However, the house prices are even higher.

It's going to be funny when some of the regulars show up to give their opinions on OP.

Default Does not surprise me one bit-

Topeka is wonderful-has all the qualities I would want in a med sized city and the price of houses there is really really low,in comparison,to say,Chicago or Mpls. The only reason I moved from Topeka was that the summer humidity was just too high for me.It's been high out here, too but still lower than that.Sometimes I wish I had a home there too, and could go back and forth--miss the library, the lake, the malls,Classic Bean. Sigh.

Houses always become more affordable if a city loses businesses/manufacturers so that doesn't surprise me. I see South Bend made the top of the list. I am familiar with that area. They have lost a lot of jobs and most of the housing that is reasonable is in neighborhoods that most would not want to live in, neighborhoods that used to be nice. The houses look really great on the internet but when I run them past my brother he says, "Ah, no, that area is too dangerous." They have lost industry like Topeka has. I am not sure how useful a list of most affordable places to buy a house is worth because if you can't find a job, well................

Unemployment rate in South Bend, IN in June 2013 was 9.4%. The unemployment rate in Topeka, KS in June 2013 was 7.3% (Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed) Didn't Topeka lose a couple of their larger manufacturers? I think Josten's was one.

I know that Mars is supposed to begin operation there relatively soon but the number of jobs won't cover the loss of the other two that went out if I remember correctly.

Review: //www.city-data.com/city/Topeka-Kansas.html for an idea of why homes are more affordable there.

My son lived in Topeka for 3 years.
