I like hiking up the beach to the end of the trail by the rocky cliffs. I like the ocean mist blowing lazy against the shore. I like the peace and quiet of the ocean . But there was a time when I went out there and the locals were tearing up the sand with their Sand Dune Buggies. What is the score ?

I think it is very unlikely that the tourists brought their dune buggies with them.

When did you go there and see "sand buggies?" When were you there that you didn't see any?

My point is that the term "locals", when used in Hawaii, carries with it a racial inference.

In response to OP's actual question, we just got back from 10 days on Kaua'i, and went to Polihale five of those days. So, very limited exposure.

One day there was someone on a dirt bike tearing up and down the beach for maybe 15 minutes or so. Two other days 4x4s with pretty serious lift kits were cruising the beach, but mainly, it seemed, to find good spots to hang out. Two other days may be half a dozen 4x4s with lift kits and Jeep Wranglers (pretty common rental vehicle) were parked at various parts of the beach just hanging out. I have no idea if 4x4s with lift kits and dirt bike were owned by Kaua'i residents or not.

How can you be certain it was not a group of mainlanders who rented sand dune buggies and were being insensitive to the land or did you profile the drivers?
