From the Louisville Courier-Journal, September 27, 2011:
Kentucky high schools only slightly better at getting graduates ready for college, workforce | The Courier-Journal | courier-journal.com
Of Valley High graduates, only 4% were prepared for the workforce or college.
Sad news, but who cares?

Get with it or get out, Vis. We have world class institutions. If you compared Kentucky High School students to those in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, New York, New Jersey, Florida or any of them other Yankee states we'd beat em across the board in all 5 essential subjects: Coal lovin', dip spittin', meth makin', basketball watching and TEA PARTYIN', YEAH! So here's to not investing in public education! I'll bring the Evan Williams if you bring the Ale8!

Maybe before a solution can be discussed awareness of the problem would be a step forward. Acknowledging that a problem exists.

There isn't anywhere in the country where you don't find discussion about how high school students are unprepared for college or the workforce. Anyone who isn't aware of the issue is living under a rock. I cannot fathom anyone denying the existence of the problem. The solution is where the real debate lies.

It is a nationwide problem. Other states do better. I think that Kentucky rates very low on education.
Like Valley High School at 4%. Western High school, in Louisville, scored 4% last year, and this year, improved to 11%. Those are terrible statistics.
I'm sure most Kentuckians are infuriated, not about the article, but that such bad news is printed.
Most of the people will always blame schools and teachers for low performance of the students, but no one blames the parents. I'll bet most Kentucky parents are more interested in high school performance at basketball and football.
These facts discourage employers to come to Kentucky.
What are the important issues in Kentucky? School prayer? Guns? Cats and Cards?

I may be treading off-topic here but the solution lies in two places IMO.

1. Parents need to get their together and be parents (NOT friends) to their kids. Parents need to take an interest in their kid's education, as in making them do their homework, demanding to see report cards, etc. I do not want to hear they are too busy with work. My mother is a single mom who worked 9 hour days but I knew better than to bring home Fs.

2. Throw out NCLB and model our school system like some European countries do. A former co-worker I know is from Germany and is appalled with how the US educational system goes when compared with Germany's. I know that Germany has a cirricilum that gives kids an option to choose a university path or a workforce career path. The US thinks every single kid should go to college and as a current student I can assure you not everyone belongs there.

West Virginia was recently in the news for trying to model their school system like Finland (where teaching is a respected occupation and there is little standardized testing) and they are showing some improvements. I think that Europe would be a good guide for the US educational system.
