The OP mentioned that he/she was in louisville....well I know quite a few people fom there and they are definately southern, and don't telll them any different! But just like any big city in the south, you will have your transplants from the north, midwest, west....so of course it's not gonna feel as southern as out in the boonies. I have been to virginia, and I didnt think it was anymore southern than KY.

I'm a southerner, BY GOD!

Frankfort was controlled by the union during the war. Lincoln even said "we cannot lose Ky"
We had our own confederate state capitol, right here in Bowling Green.

I've been given crap over this by some friends in Alabama (all in good fun, of course). I have to wonder... Why would you want to deny anyone who believed the same way? Isn't there strength in numbers? If the civil war was going on today, would Richmond not want all the support it could get?
The original confederate capital was in Montgomery, Alabama, by the way. They moved it to Richmond to be closer to D.C., which is technically also in Va.

Kentucky has a star on the confederate flag, so does Missouri... deny that!

To me, in my journeys to northern Va, it felt more like the northeast (ie: Md, NJ, Pa, etc) than it did the Carolinas. Once out in the country, it felt alot more like home.

Look at Florida. Except for the panhandle, how southern is it? There's an inside joke in northern Fl that goes something like: Florida, the only place in America where you go south, to go north.

I was born and raised in Southeast TN and I personally would feel MUCH more at home if I were in Kentucky than Virginia. I've been to both several times and to me there was no comparison. People in KY were friendly, had accents like mine...while in VA everyone looked at me like I had 3 heads when I talked. I've always considered KY to be a southern state (not that what I think means anything...lol)...don't let the haters get you
