Johnson City - Fall News & Happenings (Memphis, Franklin: cinema, schools)

Fall is always a time in this area to get out and about and 2010 is no exception:

1st Annual Downtown Corazon Latino ("A Celebration of Hispanic Arts and Culture") which is being held in conjunction with October's First Friday events. There's going to be a bilingual story hour at the JCPL, hispanic cinema at The Charles and a host of other fun events.

Sept. 26 is the Bluegrass Half Marathon (Bluegrass Half Marathon Johnson City, TN Tri-Cities TN East Tennessee) held in conjunction with ETSU's Bluegrass bands and Earth Fare. The marathon will wind through South Johnson City along State of Franklin, University Parkway and Roan Street and will feature bluegrass music at designated points throughout.

October 1-3 is the International Storytelling Festival (National Storytelling Festival • Events • International Storytelling Center) in Jonesborough.

A $3.25 million grant has been awarded to East Tennessee State University to establish the only public health training center in the state.

The grant was awarded to the school’s College of Public Health by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

At ETSU, the HRSA grant will support the launch of a new program called Tennessee LIFEPATH, or Tennessee Long-Distance Internet Facilitated Educational Program for Applied Training in Health. The university will serve as the program’s statewide hub while three schools partnering with ETSU on the grant — Meharry College of Medicine, the University of Memphis and the University of Tennessee –— will provide regional training events. Other partners include the Tennessee Department of Health and the National Association of City and County Health Officials.
