Hello Tri-City people.
We are looking at the Bluff City - Piney Flats areas and need a few questions answered before we make a trip there. We are looking for a place with (or without) a home on 15+ acres. Interested in returning to a rural life with a country setting. Interests are fishing, and hiking and being outdoors. Want our own large garden. Not too interested in a 'pasture' only place; woods are what we are after. We can clear when we need to.
I know it is close to Elizibethtown and Johnson City for shopping and other items. A little drive is OK by me. We would like any other info if possable
How is the fishing in this area? Is it all mountain roads or are there decent roads into towns? Any other web links would be helpful.
Thanks to all who make this resource as great as it is.
Don & Donna

I would suggest looking toward the Hickory Tree community upriver from Bluff City. The area on the southeast side of the Holston River has a lot of rural character and sits at the base of 4000'+ Holston Mountain. The collector roads are good in that area as I recall- this still in the valley. The side roads up into the mountain can be a different matter- they vary. The Holston River tail waters below Holston Dam down toward Hickory Tree are supposed to be one of the best fly fishing waters in the lower 48 (according to a fly fishing friend).

You can do some underground hiking in that area too since it is a very near the privately owned Morrell/Worley cave which permits self guided wild cave adventures.

The Official State of Tennessee's Department of Environment and Conservation, State Parks Website (http://www.tn.gov/environment/na/natareas/morril/ - broken link)

There are plenty of above ground hiking opportunities throughout this region.

Thanks again and if you think of other information, please chime in.
