We too are moving to East Tennessee. We have stayed in Elizabethton twice and it is a very friendly town. We happened to pull into an empty parking lot to look at the map and find ourselves when a very nice lady walked up and asked if she could help. We just so happened to be in the parking lot of the Visitors Center which she had just closed up. Well this nice lady reopened the center went inside and brought us maps and brochers of the area and then helped us with the map locations compared to where we were. Just can't get any better then that!!!!! It is an area in the mountains, small town but urban. Businesses, hotels, restraunats etc. I like it there and it is on our list of several other towns in the area. If you want to respond please do so by private message as I am new to this site and find myself getting lost in all the messages. Where did I click ten minutes ago????

Elizabethon is in Carter County. It sits at the base of Roan Mountain and is an old (by old I mean of historic nature) mountain town. It is growing. There are a few industrial parks with several different type industries/production plants.
As far is schools go, they are pretty good, a tad underfunded in my opinion and they don't have quite as many tech. things such as computers and updated schools as some surrounding counties, but still are good schools. Sports are heavily supported in the schools. Carter County school board has been through several issues, such as a board member asked to step down, in the past two years, but things seem to be evening out. In this county, it is my understanding the city schools are better than the county schools.
Carter County right now is having issues about the jail needing to be rebuilt and there is argument over the land that will be used. Other than those few political things, I don't hear much about Elizabethton on the news.
My husband works in Elizabethton and his two complaints about the town are that the drivers there seem to be a bit more reckless and there is nothing but fast food places to eat. I know there is one good Mexican restaurant there, he doesn't like spicy food, but I do! hhhahahahhaa
What else, specifically would you like to know?

I like to go to Elizabethton when I have out of town company because there's a quaint covered bridge there by the creek and a downtown street with lots of antique stores.

As far as lack of restaurants and shopping, it's quite close (10-15 minutes) to Johnson City, which has EVERYTHING. There's a historical place called 'Sycamore Shoals' in Eliz, which is a reconstructed fort - they sometimes have outdoor dramas and re-enactments of battles.

I know people who live in Elizabethton, and they love it there.
