Johnson City is a finalist for a Fortune 50 company’s new site that will have up to 800 information technology jobs, many of them requiring college-educated computer specialists, Economic Development Board members learned Thursday.

EDB Director P.C. Snapp said that after a recent conference call involving EDB staff, Johnson City City Manager Pete Peterson, state economic officials and the head of East Tennessee State University’s computer science department, Terry Countermine, Johnson City learned it was part of a list that had been whittled down to eight.

The company is seeking 100,000 square feet for jobs in service management, system operations, database management and storage management. Johnson City is home to an updated building, close to a major highway, that could fill the bill.

In addition, the state of Tennessee is classifying the project as a regional, national or international headquarters. “The state gives incentives for a project that meets those criteria,” Snapp said.

I wonder what company this is? And what building they would be considering near a major highway? Is it the old Fingerhut building? Is it big enough, or recently updated?

Hmm... at any rate, I hope JC makes it into the top 3!

Locally, I give them carte blanche. 800+ jobs would be incredible!

I agree, but the governments of North Carolina and especially Virginia have shown that they're willing to top most any offer to get businesses to relocate there, if this Fortune 50 company's looking in the upper southeast. Still, TN has had success relocating industry/business to middle TN and Chattanooga so... let's cross all our fingers lol
