I currently live in Oliver Springs, but I just got a job in Knoxville, which is quite a commute. My significant other currently works in Oak Ridge, and thus doesn't have a huge commute currently, but doesn't want to live in Knoxville which is a much longer commute. So we're looking to move some place roughly half way in between Oak Ridge and Knoxville. These are our preferences:

We'd like the time of the commute (to down town Oak Ridge, or to downtown Knoxville) to be roughly the same. I'm sure that means my commute (apt. to Knoxville) will be a shorter distance, but that's fine because my car gets much worse mileage.

We'd like to live in a cheap apartment where we don't have to fear break ins or drug raids. I'm new to the area - I don't know what "cheap" is for this location. Is $500 too much to ask for? What would you say the cheapest I could reasonably expect to pay for that area in a neighbourhood that isn't terribly bad?

That's about all I can think to ask at the moment. Any suggestions?

Are you looking for a one bedroom or a two bedroom? I live in Oak Ridge. Where is downtown Oak Ridge to you?

Yeah i didn't know Oak Ridge had a downtown?...Thats why i never consider it an actual city...But far as Apts go that meets all those needs..I'm not to sure if any Apts really exist thats under 500 bucks, safe and is the same commute as Oak Ridge and Downtown Knox...The only areas that i know of to check out would be,The Solway area,Lovell Rd and Hardin Valley areas...You might be able to find a one bedroom Apt for around 500 a month thats roughly 15-20 mins to both Knox and Oak Ridge

Hardin Valley and Cedar Bluff would both fit.

I consider downtown that businessy district between Illinois and Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Preferrably 2 bedroom, but 1 would be alright if necessary.

Right...I live in Oak Ridge and we don't have a downtown. But I agree that the Solway to Cedar Bluff areas would probably be your best bet.

We've lived in Oak Ridge for over three years now. We were enamored at first (don't ask...long story) but now we are just....meh...if I had it to do over, we'd likely have looked into the Hardin Valley to Cedar Bluff area in Knoxville even though both hubby and I work in Oak Ridge.

I understand, Godsdove. I loved OR for about the first year. So glad to not be living there anymore.

You moved inave?? I think you maybe still lived here when we came down from Indiana? I don't know...I mean, it isn't horrible here...but just...meh. LOL! Maybe I'm just having a mid-life crisis already at 39 years old. haha! We even have a son here in the school system...and it is NOT as great as they like to tell you. Is it horrible? NO...but just...okay. Again...meh...that seems to be my word for the week...if it can be called a word.

Yes, Godsdove, about two years ago. I don't mean to offend those who like OR but I was very glad to get out. We live in Fountain City now and I love this area. And you validate what my husband has always said about the OR school system. They are living in past excellence which is not necessarily the case anymore.
