Could someone give me your input on E. Knoxville.? Not Knox county but the city of Knoxville.
Is the crime bad? Why is N,S,W more desirable?
Even if I do get the job on the east side I wouldn't live there if it's "bad" or less desirable. I'd probably go with the north side. Thanks

As a general rule, East Knoxville is less desirable than the rest of the city. However, there are pockets of nice areas in East Knoxville, especially the Holston Hills area which is absolutely gorgeous.

What all are you looking for in a neighborhood, and do you have a price range? That'll help us narrow down your search for you.

I just met someone who lives there and says:

I don't really know if our area would be considered decent or not to people living outside of it. There are some areas of East Knoxville that are as bad as people think...like Martin Luther King Drive. I knew a news producer a few years back who said almost every call on the police scanner was from that neighborhood. (And most were gun shot related.) I feel safe in our area to the extent that I was there at 1 a.m. unloading stuff alone the day we moved in, but I wouldn't leave the doors unlocked.
In the area of Cecil Avenue the front of the houses look pretty good, but the back sides look run down. It's close to downtown and the interstate without "feeling" like we are.

I'd like to add that I drive down Dandridge Ave sometimes, and I drive on Boyds Bridge / McDonald / Yellowstone to go to work, and I think that's a nice quiet area.

I would think that if someone already lived in an city/town, and that city/town had an "undesirable" area, you could put two and two together and recognize what it is that makes an area not great. Generally, the things that make a neighborhood bad in one city are the same things that make an area bad in another. And I would think that the prodominate issues would be crime, unmaintained properties, and low investment appreciation. Most of us here are too wise and kind to generalize about things and offend those living in that area

Just think of us as herd dogs trying to keep a flock safe and on track without biting your ankles to drag you into the fold

The crime is only bad in certain areas, like around MLK. The suburban development on the east side is very dinky IMO and will probably only depreciate. Holston Hills is nice, and Parkridge is improving. There are also some nice streets near Morningside, but they are surrounded by ghettos. Prices are extremely affordable in E Knox though. I live around some very nice people who have been in the area for a long time, and that is much harder to find in other parts of the city, especially west. If you search long and carefully you can find your little slice of paradise in East Knoxville without sacrificing your life to the automobile like west and south knoxvillians. If you don't find anything that suits your tastes then North is a good second choice

Thanks you all for your help I appreciate it. I would assume Holston Hills is high priced. I would like to stay below $150,000. I'll probably end up on the north side. Fountain City looks really nice.

I'd like to be semi rural, below $150,000, atleast 1/4 acre lots so homes aren't too close together. Fountain City looks nice from what I've seen in the pictures. Once I get back there I'll look into what I think may interest me. I'm trying to get an idea so it won't be like a needle in a hay stack when I get there!

Yes, you should absolutely check out Fountain City. I don't know how far out you're willing to be, but you might also check out the Halls area (just north of Fountain City).
