Can anyone recommend any funky non-chain coffee houses in Knoxville? Something like Fido or Bongo Java in Nashville or Otherlands or Java Cabana in Memphis--not in a strip mall, and w/ wifi?

You will find what you are looking for downtown. “Higher Grounds” and “Downtown Grind” located on Gay St, “Coffee and Chocolate” on Union, “Mama Jan’s” on Market Square, “Old City Java” and “The Time Warp Tea Room” located in the Old City.

We have three that I know of in Maryville and there are probably more. My time in coffee shops is limited, unfortunately. There is a brand new one next to the new Honeybaked Ham and McAlisters (actually I think that is Alcoa, across from Cracker Barrell intersection), it is called Foothills Milling Company, there is The Bard Coffee House in the old Bi-Lo shopping center on W Broadway and the Capitol Theater Coffee Shop and Bakery on Broadway, smack dab downtown. Capitol was recently featured in Southern Living Magazine.

Old City Java on Central in the Old City (obviously)... I used to go to shows there all the time. It's indie, that's for sure.

Thanks....keep them coming! I love a good locally owned coffee shop. Starbucks in Target wears on me.

If you like a really chilled out place with lots of good books, a couch and delicious fair trade, organic, locally roasted coffee you MUST go to Golden Roast on the UT campus. It kept me alive while at the university! The place is owned by a man named Allen and his wife (I forget her name), and they also have VERY delicious baked goods. It is local, independent, fair trade....economically sustainable! And if you buy a $5 thermos you get 75 cent refills! AMAZING!

Namaste

Golden Roast is amazing. The first time I ever went there was for an alumni interview when I was trying to get into a certain university. It amazed my seventeen year old self quite a bit.
