Finally I am moving to Maryville next early June. I am running into an issue that I can't find an answer to. My birthday is June 6 so thus my tags expire and also my license. We are moving down June 9th but prior to that (about 2 weeks prior) my husband and I are going down to secure a place to rent. No way am I going to pay $220 for tags for a state I am permanently leaving just 3 days afterwards. I am more worried about how I am going to obtain a license with TN since my MI one expires June 6th. I plan on opening a bank acct while we are there getting a rental in mid May and we will be staying with friends and I can use their mailing address. I'm just concerned how I'm going to pull all of this off because of the dates involved. Any one in here have any knowledge they can share with me? It is much appreciated.

So you plan to establish residency before your tags expire right? You should be okay I think. You might want to call the county clerks office (tags & registration) to clarify.
I'd pop on over to the county clerks office to register the same day you get your lease and set up your bank account or utility services, with documents in hand.

A license is inexpensive enough that if you can't find time to switch over right after you find a place to rent, I'd just bite the bullet and renew in your home state and do it again here

When I moved from CA, my car tags expired a week before the move. I did not renew, and just held my breath until I crossed the border into AZ. I don't think TN cares what your old tags expire (could be wrong).

The folks at the county clerks office don't care, not necessarily true for the cops though.
Memphis cops pulled me over on the way out of town for expired tags, on the day I loaded up my uhaul to leave for good. I still got a ticket even though I explained I had been living in a hotel in Bristol without a permanent address to use. Told them I had just closed on the house on planned to renew in Bristol and wasn't coming back to memphis, but it made no difference at all. It might be different for someone driving on expired tags from out of state, but I don't know if I'd chance it, the cop that pulled me over had no sympathy for my situation at all.

Thank you for your responses I am really hoping I can get the license thing taken care of. The timing couldn't be worse. I am actually more worried about the license expiring than about the tags needing renewal. It has been such a long time since my license expired that I can't remember what is required to renew it! The timing of all of this is horrible!

I don't know what your DL renewal costs in your state but here in Minnesota it was between 20-25, not enough to not do it. You may pay twice or you may get a time reprieve so you don't have to panic.

I've only met one grumpy DMV worker in my life. Most are very willing to answer questions.
