does a place like this exist? Desserts, coffees - NOT a full-service restaurant and not a bar. Maybe some couches or comfy chairs, and live acoustic music on weekend nights?

There are at least three that I know of in Maryville alone. The entertainment schedules vary. One of them was just featured in Southern Living magazine! There are also other places like the coffee shop within the Blount County library, Panera, etc.

JR why do you capitalize the first letter of every word? where were you raised?
Smoky Gal, can you tell me what 3 places you are talking about, or are you not allowed to "advertise" them?

NJDevil, the software that runs this forum automatically converts the words to the first letter being capitalized and the remaining ones lowercase when the text (of an entire message) has been typed in all caps. Sometimes people are vision impaired, or sometimes they work in an all caps program, and do not type with normal punctuation, and forget to take Caps Lock Off before they type here.

The three coffee houses that I can think of right offhand are Bards, Capitol Theater and Foothills Milling (new within the last two months).

Thanks for the info about all caps. They say typing in all caps is like yelling....
Thanks for the coffee places, we'll check them out soon.

I won't go on campus. I refuse to hang out with college kids. Old City - I'm not sure which places they are - don't really feel safe there at night though.

The Old City is actually relatively safe. A few cases of crime are often blown out of proportion by the paper and surburbanites. It is no more dangerous than any other downtown area, and safer than many.

I always felt much safer downtown at night than I did in most shopping centers in West Town in the daytime!

There's a very neat little coffee shop on Melrose, just down below the new Business (or is it Public Policy? ... the latter, I think) building UT built on the strip.

Of course, you might have to hang out with a few of us college kids to enjoy it.
