I ran across a web site commemorating the 1982 World's Fair in our beloved Knoxville. If it has already been mentioned in this forum, I apologize. But I got a kick out of the pictures, so I'm going to share them here. Again, this is what downtown Knoxville was like in 1982 for the World's Fair. Enjoy!

Downtown Knoxville didn't look nearly as good then as it does now.

Thank you, JMT! A cookie for you as soon as I spread them around enough.

The World's Fair was such fun. I was in school, but we used to go at night and on weekends. It seemed so magical!

You're right, KTowner, downtown wasn't nearly as nice back then. No Old City, and the Candy Factory probably still sold candy. And you could actually eat in the sunsphere, and the food was good! Wow, 26 years-- a lifetime ago...

I agree, downtown Knoxville is nicer today than it was in 1982. I don't think we could've said that 10 years ago. I am thrilled to see all the revitalization going on in downtown Knoxville these days.

The World's Fair was magical! I remember being so proud that it was in Tennessee. It was also the first world's fair in which China participated. We (my family) had just moved back after living in China for a couple of years, so that was pretty special for us to see the China pavilion. I was probably an arrogant jerk, too, bragging that the China pavilion was boring compared to the real China. Oh well.

I think World's Fair Park looks a ton better today than it did 10 years ago, I just wish it was used more. I wish the big outdoor concert pavilion were used a lot more (there's something magical about attending an outdoor symphony with fireflies in the background). I wish that colossal waste of a convention center wasn't there and there were some high-rise apartment or condo towers there instead.

But still, for a year or so our little Knoxville was in the international spotlight!

I also loved the World's Fair as well. I was living in Kingsport then but came down to Knoxville with my parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles. Oh such sweet memories of my dear grandparents that are gone now.

Wink Fabulous! Thanks, JMT.

What wonderful sights and for those of you who experienced the World's Fair, what memories and adventure.

There could be a repeat. Let's hope. Thanks for pulling those pics out of your hat, JMT. They are wonderful.
