Thanks for the low down on grocery shopping there JMT and Trevor. Sounds like we'll have plenty of options. I will definitely hit the Costco, and try Publix once it opens and we get there. I won't be too happy about the higher sales taxes, but it is what it is. On the other hand, my husband says he rather get hit with one tax like that instead of many openly and hidden taxes we do here in WV. It's still much more reasonable to live there, and we love it there.

There is something about this area and grocery stores. We've got a lot of them. Also bear in mind that we have incredible farmer's markets during the growing season. You can now find one seven days a week during the right time of year, the largest being downtown on Saturdays.

You are right about the sales tax. I really hated it at first, but once you take into account all the sneaky fees in all the other states you realize how far ahead we come out. TN is 47th in tax burden. WV is 27th.

After six years I can truly say that I thank God everyday that I live in beautiful Knoxville with its great weather, wonderful people and lovely downtown. By the way, I'm from Mass. I've added a lot more "r"s to my vocabulary since I left over 15 years ago but I haven't picked up a new accent.

Thanks for this. I'm here in Knox via Atlanta and before that - Connecticut - #3 on that tax burden list.

A good move to have Publix and Wal-Mart close to downtown.

I'm a little surprised at this development, but it can work. I've seen urban Publix stores in Tampa and Atlanta, and they've announced they're doing one in downtown Nashville. Publix does a good job with whatever they do.

I'm just worried about the traffic. The traffic patterns there at Cumberland/Alcoa Hwy are awful, and this will just add to it. But if they can figure that out, I can guarantee that I'll be doing the bulk of my grocery shopping at that Publix.

Side note: I just got back from Florida. The manager I talked to at a Publix north of Tampa said he has applied to be transferred to Knoxville, and that Publix is going to open four locations in Knoxville. So far, they've announced three...

I wouldn't worry too much about the traffic. The project will have to have their plans approved by all sorts of entities and one element of those plans will be traffic control. The city of knoxville will work with the developer to put whatever infrastructure in place is needed for traffic control. I'm currently working on a somewhat similar project in a town just outside Knoxville and we're actually going to relocate a side street about 25 yds down the main road to accomodate the project. Doesnt sound like a big deal but it really is.

Also, I've been told that Publix has committed to 5 stores in the "Knoxville area." With 3 being already announced, my unofficial guess would be north Knoxville and perhaps a neighboring community just outside of Knoxville.

I'm looking foward to shopping there!

Yippeeeee! They have the BEST sandwiches, at least they did in the Atlanta metro area.
Also, we loved when they and Krogers would have battles over sale pricing, it always worked out well for the consumer.

Publix does indeed have awesome subs! I had several while I was in Florida for the last 10 days.

And, unlike just about every other supermarket, anyone can get in on Publix's sales prices; you don't need to have a loyalty card.
