Can anyone advise of any weight gyms other than Curves that women feel comfortable working out in Blount Co or West Knox area? I'm just talking a place that hopefully has free weights and not just machines that is not all-guy and where the men don't try to run the women off for just stepping in the door. Maybe the atmosphere isn't like that anymore anyway. But when I lived in Oak Ridge 12 years ago the men didn't like women in "their" gym and I was basically run out. I really need to lose weight and have been lifting with small dumbells and resistance bands at home because I am planning on moving to East TN and didn't want to start a gym membership here. So I want to join a real gym once I get to TN and continue losing weight and strengthening body. I don't think Curves will do it because they don't have free weights nor heavy resistance from what I've read and a friend who goes there told me. So any other ideas appreciated.

I've used both Rush and Court South and never had a problem -- as a woman and working out with weights and machines. Both have huge facilities with everything you could want and are open 24/7.
The YMCA's around town also have excellent facilities and Fort Sanders Medical Center operates one.
There are also some smaller chains that have opened that put more emphasis on free weights, like Snap Fitness Center.
Most offer a wide variety of classes and you'll also find pilates studios and yoga studios.

I thought that was a Curves that is at Foothills? From what I understand Curves doesn't have free weights or anything other than resistance machines.

I workout at The Rush and love it. They have a ladies-only room if that's what you prefer (free weights, weight machines and cardio machines) and also a ton of different classes, etc. There is one in Maryville and also one in S. Knoxville on Chapman Hwy.

There's a Rush in Maryville? Really? Do you know where? I thought there was only one in Oak Ridge. I haven't heard of ladies-only rooms so that's cool. Nothing against guys; I just don't like them saying things like "women shouldn't be allowed to join gyms" which is what I dealt with at Lifters Club back in the 1980's. Hopefully attitudes have changed since then, but that is what stopped me working out.

Curves is in the strip shopping center near Fowlers. Ladies Fitness is in the Foothills Mall.

The Rush is actually in Alcoa but right on the city lines. It is in the Midland Plaza on N. Calderwood.
