I ALWAYS rent a car when I plan to drive 500+ miles in a given weekend. It is on average cheaper than operating my own car.
I AVOID Enterprise as much as possible. WHY? You better read the fine print. Many of their best deals only include 100-150 miles per day. Their definition of the type of vehicles is unusual - a Toyota Camry is NOT a luxury car. Also, the cars that I have rented from them have NOT been clean. My wife is an insurance adjuster and has moved to Hertz on replacement rentals.
I have had the best luck with HERTZ LOCAL EDITION. Translate that as a Hertz location that is NOT at an airport. The weekend rate on a couple weekends that I checked were $19/day. Renting at the airport will cost substantially more due to the fees and the airport taxes. HLE will also pick you up, much like Enterprise.
No matter what agency you use, make sure that you click on the specials to see if there are any that are available. Also, find a discount program (AAA, airline, etc) and enter that.
Good luck.
