Hi folks -

I am soon to be living in Las Cruces, and will need to be making a lot of drives back and forth to and from S. Arizona. I don't want to put tons of mileage on my late model truck, so I am thinking about renting a car in Cruces once a month or so. Any recommendations on who to use? I see all the big chains are there; I'm wondering who gives the best face to face service at the counter (not necessarily just the best price) and who has the most smoothly running operation in town to rent from. Thanks lots!

Dealership rented a car from Enterprise for me when I had warranty work done and it was a pleasant experience.

I ALWAYS rent a car when I plan to drive 500+ miles in a given weekend. It is on average cheaper than operating my own car.

I AVOID Enterprise as much as possible. WHY? You better read the fine print. Many of their best deals only include 100-150 miles per day. Their definition of the type of vehicles is unusual - a Toyota Camry is NOT a luxury car. Also, the cars that I have rented from them have NOT been clean. My wife is an insurance adjuster and has moved to Hertz on replacement rentals.

I have had the best luck with HERTZ LOCAL EDITION. Translate that as a Hertz location that is NOT at an airport. The weekend rate on a couple weekends that I checked were $19/day. Renting at the airport will cost substantially more due to the fees and the airport taxes. HLE will also pick you up, much like Enterprise.

No matter what agency you use, make sure that you click on the specials to see if there are any that are available. Also, find a discount program (AAA, airline, etc) and enter that.

Good luck.
