There's a gate here in town that used to rival the famous, iconic Josefina's Gate, which is immortalized in paintings, photos, drawings, you name it. This gate didn't get the attention of Josefina's but it's one I always loved..in a pretty run-down wall and family compound. Last year the arch fell over. It was always looking fragile so this wasn't a huge surprise. What was a surprise (and not a good one) was the clumsy effort to rebuild it, where the only resemblance to the fallen arch was the fact that it, too, was adobe. This is how to do it wrong, and also an appreciation of what was. The new but certainly not improved is the middle pic. The early photo is courtesy of my neighbor and good friend Tony L. Mil gracias Tony!
