I have read many reviews and the ones that are $600 and under seem to be rated pretty low. I can afford above $600, but will be returning to college so I need to save money. Also, I have read that these swamp coolers that most of the complexes have are crap. They say they bring in smells from outside and anything else in the vicinity. My question is are there any decent complexes ranging in price below $600, that don't have swamp coolers and that are in a relatively safe area? Where is the nicest place to live in LC that is priced decently? Any other information anyone can provide about the apartments in this city would be greatly appreciated.

Greco Rentals has some decent apartments in the University area at good prices. They're likely to all have swamp coolers, but I've never really had a problem with swamp coolers other than not working well on humid days. Air conditioners are considerably more expensive to run than swamp coolers.

I just got back from LC and my problem with University Ave is that, for the most part, there are no stores near the apts. Is that right? Indeed, there aren't any stores near most decent subdivisions either.
What do people think of the subdivisions just north of town (to the left of the highway), hear many people working in White Sands live there? You can get a new 1500 sf house, 3 bdrm for $160k and a nice view of the Organ mtains.

There's Toucan Market on University. They're also probably going to pass a pretty major zoning revision there that should change the area considerably over time, resulting in many more stores and services in the area.

Left of which highway? Heading north? I suspect whichever highway you mean, it will be far from stores at this point.
