I personally like some of the neighborhoods around the University, but my favorite areas are the areas between University and Highway 70, to the east of Lohman. Not necessarily just Sonoma Ranch, but I drive around back there every once in a while and some of those neighborhoods back there are REALLY nice.

It's like a part of Cruces that I never knew was there. lol.

North Valley is nice. West of Valley Dr., Taylor Road area. Really close to East Picacho Elem, Picacho Mid or Vista Mid aren't too far off. And Mayfield is just down the street. The area is rural-esque, and everyone is pretty nice & neighborly. The houses are the crap-quality you'll generally find in the new developments.

Default Schools in Las Cruces

Folks interested in how the Las Cruces Public Schools compare statistically should have a look at the various reports on the district website: Las Cruces Public School District (http://lcps.k12.nm.us/Departments/AAR/data.shtml - broken link) .

As is usually the case, school quality varies by neighborhood and the relatively more affluent neighborhoods tend to have the better schools. That being said, there are some fantastic (and some less-so) teachers throughout the system. Our kids went through Desert Hills and we were, for the most part, pleased. We also have friends happy with Hillrise, Highland, Sonoma, and Tombaugh. I saw an outstanding bilingual program last year at Macarthur, and, were my kids younger, I would seriously consider enrolling them there.

In addition to the public schools, there is a Catholic parochial system, Mesilla Valley Christian, Las Cruces Academy, and a growing homeschool community, including both faith-based and inclusive support groups.

Good luck to your friend -- may she love it here!
