Yep, people here whose only frame of reference is dry heat have no idea how horrible the humidity is back East. The summer heat here is nothing compared to the heat + humidity of the East Coast. My wife and I were walking up and down the Strip yesterday afternoon as if it was a spring day in D.C. She was in Maryland last week and was miserable. We're going back to D.C. next month for a wedding and I'm already dreading it. While I have no qualms about walking around Vegas at any time of day, I'll be staying indoors as much as possible when I'm in D.C. As I've posted previously, there's a reason that Washington basically closes down for the month of August. It's absolutely horrible there.

The same could be said of people from back east not knowing what dry heat is like. You're right about DC, it's no fun in the summer, and as you go south from there it just gets worse. When I lived back east I used to be soaked with sweat all the time, and had constant sinus headaches caused by humidity. Since moving to Nevada neither of those has been a problem.

Oatman is a great little trip out of Vegas. I've taken folks that way over the years.

I usually drive down to Laughlin, then you can see the river, cross, go toward Bullhead City and have a great breakfast/lunch at Black Bear Diner. Then hit the road to Oatman, you know you are there when you see burros.

Read up on the town - a lot of history. Last time I was there (June 2009), the hotel was closed - the one that had the rooms as they were upstairs back in the early 1900s, where Clark Gable and bride had their honeymoon. All food in Oatman is awful, so avoid it.

The town isn't as full of shops and kitsch as it was 5-10 years ago; now its kind of sad and touristy. You don't need to stay long at all. The post office when going out of town toward Kingman is cute.

Route 66 to Kingman is desolate, but really interestingly so. About 2 miles out of Oatman, stop at the graveyard - part Native American style - find the grave of Jimmy Hoffa (I dare you!) - then through the parched mine-lands to Kingman.

The new Route 66 museum in Kingman is a nice stop, as is Inn-n-Out.... then drive toward Boulder City, via Hoover Dam.

Stop for a nice bite in Boulder City hotel (great sandwiches) - or any of the nice diners in BC. Then back to Vegas. Its a good day trip!

And for those complaining about the heat in Vegas - its a dry heat! You don't know that yet!???

And don't forget to stop at Radiator Springs to say hello to McQueen, Doc, Mater and Sally.
