What events or times of the year are the hotels at very high occupancy or sold out?

I would think New Years, COMDEX in Nov, major boxing matches. Anything else?

Nationals Finals Rodeo, which starts the first Thursday in December, Super Bowl which is the first Sunday in February and March Madness opening Rounds, starting the 3rd Thursday in March are usually sold out (those weekends).

COMDEX no longer exists.

I would say that the rates generally go through the roof during the CES, NASCAR races, and during the Super Bowl and first weekend of the NCAA basketball tournament.

You can always find a room, but you will pay a lot more.

SEMA, coming up in the first week of November, and ConExpo in March are both really big. However, as jlawrence pointed out, even those days don't sell out, rooms just get very pricey.

I attended World of Concrete which is a pretty big show and paid $59/night at the Imperial Palace ON A SATURDAY NIGHT using the show rates (which generally are NOT the cheapest).

Since I had to book some rooms at SEMA, here are the going rates:

If you are smart and book well in advance, the rates are downright cheap.

From my experience, I can generally beat the show rates if you shop around.

Gone are the days where you could reserve a block of rooms at Circus Circus twelve months before Comdex and then sell the rooms for $300 per night to people desperate for a room.

The implosion of Comdex was spectacular. From the largest convention in Vegas to non-existent in just a few short years. I attended SEMA last year and stayed at The Encore because of its proximity to the convention center. Thanks for linking to the show pricing. I might be a little more proactive this year and save some money!
