I'm just jumping in here, begging your pardon, but I have a question. Is there any serious talk about reinventing the economy of Las Vegas by broadening it? Right now, it seems like a one-industry town: a vacation destination. But, the weakness is that Las Vegas' economy depends on the discretionary income of others -- which is scarce in the midst of an economic recession / contraction. Is there serious talk among Las Vegas civic leaders to broaden the economy of Las Vegas beyond being a vacation spot? Pittsburgh reinvented itself after the steel industry shrunk. Now it has a diverse and reasonably strong economy. Perhaps Las Vegas could develop a more diverse economy too?

I honestly believe that Vegas (And all of Nevada) SHOULD be doing that. Low tax rates, almost no regulation, international airport, and very close to California and their ship yards.....

However, I believe the hang up IS Las Vegas. People don't want to live here. We have the 48th worst school system in the nation (and getting worse). No, or very little, "culture" (museums, zoos, theater, etc). A very sub-standard mass transit system, and roads.

If you want businesses to move here, it has to be a place people want to live. Where they want to raise a family, and retire. People came here for the boom. And, as soon as the boom went away, so did the people. The population is starting to come back slowly, but I think where we are now is right around where Vegas will always be.

May as well legalize gay marriage here, too. We could use a lot more homosexuals in town. It'd make the place more interesting. (Cirque, Elton and Cher do their best. But let's make it legal. Besides, I'd love to see a Big Gay Elvis Wedding Chapel.)

Let's make the Las Vegas theme song Cole Porter's "Anything Goes."

Hubby and I saw Cher a few years ago. There was a gay couple making out in the row in front of us. My hubby was shocked. After the show I told him that Cher is a gay Icon. He might not have gone if I told him first. He loved the show and we plan to see her again.

I cannot believe that in 2011, in the "most civilized country in the world", that we have to deal with "those" people.

The racist, homophobic, sexist people. Does anyone realize that we are one of the last countries in the civilized world to "accept" gay marriage.

The issue of same-sex marriage has been a controversial debate throughout the world, and several regions and countries have passed statutory and constitutional amendments that explicitly prohibit the legal recognition of same-sex marriage, sometimes also barring any form of recognition

Just a small update on the no jobs in Vegas thread..I got back here 3 weeks ago from Ohio after a 4 year brain fart(to leave in the first place) and have had 19 interveiws at 11 different jobs. Have not liked the make-up of the company in a couple and have narrowed it down to 2 offers, one from a casino to be an Asst Manager in a couple of their stores and one to be a supervisor at a Warehouse of a office supply chain. I might have got lucky but I was out there looking, even at a fast food restaurant who would not give me a job based on to much managerial expereince thinking I would leave at the offer from a better company(of course). My wife showed up in June and within a month had over 10 teaching offers. So if you really want to work, then there ae jobs out there for you to get. YOu just have to look and not listen to those who proclaim this place is dead weight!
