Yes, the touristy areas are full of people doing what they want to do when they come to Las Vegas.

And our neighborhoods are full of people, singles and families living life as they would in any other city, in any other state. Are some folks living on the edge of financial ruin...yes. Are a lot of people over their heads in financial negativity with their homes...yes. Did a lot of people lose their job...yes. Did a lot of people close up their businesses when they got in over their heads financially with their homes...yes.

But the majority of folks here in the valley, are busy working at their jobs, shopping, eating out, attending events around the valley and living regular lives. The roads are still congested, particularly at rush hour, so the majority of folks are working.

You go in any local store, any restaurant, local places off the beaten tourist track, and they are crowded (have to wait on weekends to get in any of our local and popular restaurants) malls are crowded (especially on weekends) and on weekends especially our local casinos are full of people playing. I know, I was in every one of them for a couple of weeks, lol. My sister from NY asked "what recession in Las Vegas?"

So, because Las Vegas was the fastest growing hotspot in the nation for so long, it's only natural the media wants to paint the other picture, it makes for great reading and most people in the country are interested in anything to do with Las Vegas. It makes for great headlines and means more people buying their material. Las Vegas is just one of those places that always was and always will be...in the national spotlight, whether the story is good, bad or even true for that matter.
IVE BEEN HEARING THE TERM " VALLEY" A LOT. WHAT IS THAT?

I have yet to see a reality show on people who keep clean homes but Hoarders is reeling in the ratings!

So, if the media didn't show the seedy parts of LV and exaggerate it, then I suppose it just wouldn't interest some to come there. I mean, how many times do you hear about Omaha, NE in the rag sheets? But, it is nice there in some areas, cruddy in others, same as all bigger cities. Just kind of boring to tourists looking to "get away" and do something different from their own boring lives.

Seriously, my dad thinks LV is nothing more than what he sees on CSI LV! Cracks me up. I tell him to quit watching that and go visit. Or he could just go to Hiker's picture thread!!! I have never seen the media out filming in Centennial Hills. Not exciting enough? Wouldn't sell, I suppose.

Know that I am not disputing that there IS a seedy side to Las Vegas, homeless abound begging for whatever, crime, schools that need to be taken a bit more seriously, unemployment too high, homeowners drowning underwater...I am just saying that there is another side, a bigger side, a better side. One where people can be and are happy there. Families raising smart happy children who do not dream of being pole dancers or dealers. Businesses that are actually making it. Buildings that are getting finished or redone. I do not hide my head in the sand, ignoring the negative issues of the US, (kind of hard to hide from it when you live in both of the top two economic disastrous states in the Union) but I prefer to try and find the positives.

But, sadly, that side doesn't sell papers, ads or good story lines.

Well I gotta admit, the media is mostly responsible for my decision on moving to the las vegas area. The impression I got was Fun, Fun, Fun and More Fun!!! I guess Ive been brain washed!!!!

Las Vegas is located in a valley, mostly surrounded by mountains. And in that valley are the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas and unincorporated Clark County...it's what makes up the 2 million plus population figure you often hear about. Some folks and even the media, mistakenly quote statistics/facts for Las Vegas, when sometimes those figures also include the other locales I mentioned.

Henderson and North Las Vegas are independent of Las Vegas, with their own garbage company, water companies, police department, fire department, etc.

Example...our population IN THE VALLEY COMBINED is a bit over 2 million people right now. Las Vegas only has about half (or maybe even less) of that population living within it's borders. The rest is all unincorporated Clark County, North Las Vegas and Henderson, as well as smaller jurisdictions, but that's just getting too confusing and you really don't have to worry about that. You'll hear that the Strip is located in Paradise, Nevada...it's a tiny jurisdiction, but that's all commonly known as Las Vegas.

We say "valley" because some of us live in North Las Vegas, Henderson or Las Vegas. These places are all attached to one another, there is no land separating the cities, it's almost like one BIG city but it isn't.

So when you hear "valley" note that it means those different cities combined and it's not just all Las Vegas.

Hope this helps you!

Means the Las Vegas Valley, or the Metropolitan area known generally as Las Vegas. But what we refer to as Las Vegas includes the city of Las Vegas, the city of North Las Vegas, the city of Henderson, and the unincorporated county areas. The county is almost the size of Vermont, but nearly all the population is centered in this valley that we call Las Vegas. You'll see. From higher elevations you can see the whole of metro Las Vegas and it is seamless.

Actually, and somebody else can look this up, I read that what we refer to as a valley is actually an alluvial plain. Check your Funk & Wagnall.

LOL See when I came here it was SUCH a culture shock! I come from a smaller town in Cali (100,000 people) and I came to Vegas with over 2 million! It was quite an adjustment. Be careful in North Las Vegas. Living in the east near sunrise mountain or southwest are usually the best bets until you get used to the people in this town and get to know which areas are less traffic where the police are concerned. Some of the newer built areas in the northwest are safer too. They tend to cater to families though. We are also a Air Force town. You will see military everywhere lol

I have been here for almost 12 years now and I have lived in all parts of the town. I was talking about around the hollywood area (up on sunrise mountain) but anywhere you go in this town you have to go through the not so nice parts to get to the nice parts.
