I live in New York and I'm think of moving to either Vegas or L.A. If I do move to Vegas, I do have some experience as a phone operator and claening woman and I like some advise as to where to get a job at which hotel to choose from. Also I'm a freelance makeup artist as well. Any common sense advice would be great. Thank you.

LA is a toilet, very dirty and crime-ridden. Las Vegas is a little bit better but it's not a good place either. It's definetly more affordable than LA though. There are tons of hotel jobs where you can clean, they are in the paper every week.

I moved to Henderson/Las Vegas 9 years ago after 20 years in Connecticut. I live in a nice area of Henderson (pretty much ALL of Henderson is nice) and am very happy here. Yes, there are some bad areas of Las Vegas, and that's common in every city in the world. If you decide to move to Las Vegas I'd be happy to help you locate appropriate housing.
As for your job, I recommend the "Station" casinos. They are not on the Strip so you would have fewer issues for parking, possible crime, etc. The newest one open is Red Rock Casino in Summerlin. There's also Texas, Boulder, Santa Fe, Green Valley Ranch, Sunset and Palace Station Casinos. Another bonus ... if you tire of one location you could ask for a transfer and stay within the "Station" family for benefits, etc.
Good luck in your decision and enjoy the warmer weather out here!

Having lived in Las Vegas for 6 years, I can tell you that unless you're hispanic and plan to live with 10 other people in a 3 bedroom house, I wouldn't count on making a living as a cleaning lady in a hotel- the majority of the cleaning crews do just that, and the wages reflect it.

I'd think you'd do far better in another career, though I doubt phone operators get paid very well in Vegas (is there really a need for a phone operator anymore, anyway?), and I can't comment on the makeup artist trade, but I'd assume the showgirls all need someone to do their makeup, si it's an option I guess.

Las Vegas is not a bad place to live if you can find a good neighborhood. Whatever you do, stay away from the following areas.

North Las Vegas, anywhere on or near Craig Rd. east of the I-15. The only safe place in that area is Nellis AFB.

Stay away from all these streets along I-15,

Lake Mead Bl.
D St.
Cheyanne
Craig Road.

If you go west towards Summerlin or Red Rock, you'll find nice areas out there. Henderson to the south is nice too. There are highend homes being built in places like Southern Highlands and Seven Hills which is located on on St. Rose Pkwy (Exit 27 off I-15) Southern Highlands boast a pretty good 1.2 million dollar home price tag.

When it comes to Las Vegas you must do some shopping around to find a place. Good Luck.

Dear Hank,

Don't forget where I live in Henderson (Anthem-Coventry Area). I know you already mentioned Henderson but I wanted to be more specific. Also, Anthem Country Club and Sun City Anthem.

The public schools that I'm zoned for are excellent.

Sincerely,

Laura Kimmick

I used to live in the Southfork subdivision on the southeast corner of Eastern and St. Rose Pkwy in Henderson and I moved there when Seven Hills was still mostly undeveloped, there wasn't an Anthem to speak of, and most was still open desert. I LOVED it!!!! I worked in Summerlin, also a nice area, but my heart was in Henderson and I loved my house and I loved my neighborhood, and I loved laying in bed at night upstairs with my head propped up on a pillow watching the Las Vegas Strip Hotels and lights six miles to the north in the distance. It was magical. I know there are areas of Las Vegas that aren't nice, and I know some people have bad experiences there, but I lived there until I sold in June of last year (thank God!) and I can honestly say... I LOVED IT!!!!

What you did not mention is that you still hear the sirens atl all hours of the day, the planes from McCaren flying overhead all day and night, as well as in the Sunrise and NLV area you have Nellis AFB flying low overhead. I was born in Vegas 40 years ago, and moved away two years ago. It is not what it used to be, and never will be again. As you dirve down the streets in Vegas, everything is dirty because you live in the desert primarily, but also because most people do not care about nature and throw their trash out the window deiving down the road. Rarely do you see a street sweeper unless you live on the Blvd. I moved to Florida, and make better money, as well as live in a really nice neighborhood doing the exact same job I did back home. When I drove down the street today, I do not have to worry about getting a stray bullet because I drive the wong color vehicle, or because someone was mad and decided to go postal on the public at large. If you want to live in the Vegas area, try living close to Mount Charleston and commuting to work..., much longer of a drive and not too much scenery, but was safer and cost is about the same as in Florida.

I think you have to be an illegal to get one of those hotel jobs. That's all I saw there working in the hotels.

Those Station Casinos are crime infested too, especially the Palace Station, Sante Fe has bums in there too be careful.
