I saw an 8 footer on a ranch near Laredo once. Was watching an episode of Border Wars shot in Laredo/Webb County last night. There was a segment on the Border Patrol chasing down these guys in some heavy vegetation, and I was thinking about all the snakes I'd seen there. I saw more snakes in the parking lot at my apartment in less than three years than the total I've seen around here in 47. A cowboy down there told me he wore chaps because more than once he'd a had snakes strike at his legs.

I remember doing a commercial for a vet from San Antonio that had supposedly come up with a vaccine for dogs against snake bites. They said that over 400 humans suffered snake bites every year in San Antonio.

I doubt if there are 400 snake bites a year in all of Nevada. Anybody know?

It was in Laredo in the mid 70's. Sounded like a Texas style tale to me too. I can imagine Bexar County having several though. But I'dda thunk Webb County would be even worse and I never heard of that happening there. Scorpion bites, sí.

I'm moving to Las Vegas next year. I guess it's safe to say that snakes pretty much aren't a big issue

They are no issue at all in town. Out in the desert or hiking in the mountains they aren't much of an issue. Just don't stick your fingers anyplace you can't see into. Remember, a snake is out looking for food and needs to preserve it's venom for the small animals it plans to eat. You are not snake food so rather than waste venom on you it will hide or run ...usually.
