Oh, and we originally hail from Detroit. I'm sorry, but the crime here pales in comparison. There are places in Detroit that the cops won't even go at night. Vegas just does NOT have anywhere near that level of crime.

But I really think part of the problem with the complaints is that the whole city is quite urban, and there's no real suburbia that's comparable to what other cities have... plus there are no nearby small towns that are commutable (or at least not affordable ones, since Boulder City would be one).

Great post, everything that you said is right on the money. The thing that the bashers don't get is that these things happen in any city in America. Seeing what I see every day in DC and Baltimore makes Las Vegas more like Mayberry. That's why I get such a laugh out of the negativity in these posts. If those same people think it's bad in Vegas they should spend a week in SE DC or East Baltimore or Detroit. Vegas is paradise compared to those parts.

Unfortunately, these people haven't had a real taste of what serious crime is like. When Vegas turns out like Newark where there are execution-style killings, then there needs to be concern. For now, with Metro's stats showing more crimes against property than against persons, Vegas is still a pretty safe town.

To the bashers, I'll be more than happy to recommend cities to relocate to where they roll up the sidewalks at dusk. Then you can have your utopia.

I think you'd better do a recount. If you don't like Las Vegas that's OK; just leave and we'll all be happy. But don't make up lies about it just to justify your attempt to be right by making us wrong. You black cloud people see the cup half empty and some of us see it half full. You want to influence our thinking toward the negative, and we'd like for you to see the positive. But that's really impossible to do when dealing with those who are always negative about everything. They think it's their duty to bring everyone down to the dark, miserable place where they live, and any attempt to get them to see things in a good light will fail.

That's due to the flat desert terrain. Eastern suburbs have woods, trees, hills, streams, etc., that act as natural dividers, and screens from the bad parts. It may be pretty but it has a lot of drawbacks. Here it's all out there for everyone to see, like a Tropicana showgirl; but ya works with whatcha got.

We are also land locked, and will run out of places to build sooner or later. Land in most states is all privately owned. Most of the land in the western states still belongs to the public and is controlled by the Bureau of Land Management, BLM, and other government agencies like the U.S. Forest Service. Nevada is 83% Federal land (thank goodness). It cannot be spoiled by development. Ranchers can't fence the rest of us out. Some of it is used for the military, and other common good, like the Nevada Nuclear Test Site.

The public land is not owned by the government, it is managed by them for the real owners, the American public. Be thankful that Nevada isn't congested with one little town after the other, and privately owned land that keeps the rest of us fenced out. I don't know about the rest of you, but when I go anywhere east of the Mississippi where the roads are like narrow canyons of trees, and you can't see ten feet on the other side, and there is no space between towns, and there are people covering every inch of the land, I feel claustrophobic and can't wait to get back to the wide open spaces of the west. buzz you missed my point I'm not just harping about the negative things in las Vegas . i just get upset when you and others insult and mock other people with opposing views . i understand las Vegas has some positives and negatives just like any other city but my recent posts have pointed out the negatives of living in this city. i don't understand why you and others put on blinders and act like this ciy is paradise and has no faults. just talking with longtime residents they have told me that the cost of housing has skyrocketed , crime is getting worse , schools are horrible , people are not civil to each other. having lived here for 2 years i can see all of what they are saying . that is why i moved back to Wisconsin. their is nothing wrong with criticizing this city its not perfect it has alot of of room for improvement. so go ahead and point out the all the great thing this city has to offer and me and other will point out the negatives . just be respectful of other peoples posts and understand that someone may have an opposing view. thank you for your understanding buzz.

I would love to go to Compton. Beautiful city. It's only bad because of ignorant stereotypes like the ones you have. I'm white too but have been to Compton many times to visit one of my best friends from college. I leave my 2006 Chevy Tahoe outside and nobody messes with it. I have never had any problems in these so called "bad" cities. Las Vegas is one of them. I have a friend that lives on 15th street and never have had a problem. I have more problems in my hometown of Detroit (the city, I didn't live in the suburbs) than I have ever had in your fine city. To all the Las Vegans that complain about your city, it could be much worse. I have lived in Detroit, Houston and St. louis. All worse than the fine city of Las Vegas. I have spent alot of time in LV and love it, I cannot wait for the move in November. Las Vegans, you have a wonderful city. All cities have their problems.

I for one, love this place! Some of my favorite parts are the strip malls and big block stores on every corner. I love knowing that Walmart is only minutes away. If you get jealous reading this, don't worry one will be near you soon. I also can't get enough of unique restuarants like Chili's and Applebees, thankfully there are plenty of those too. Oh, and I can't forget all the wonderful fast food chains that build on every empty lot. This way if I am too lazy to go to Chili's I know I can choose from dozens of nearby places. If I'm craving Mexican food, I have several nearby Taco Bells, German food? Wienershnitzel! Seafood? Long John Silvers! I also enjoy driving around town. There is always lots of road construction going on, so there is always something fun and interesting to look at while I am stopped at a stoplight, wondering why they are tearing up the same road agian. I don't know why you guys are so hard on the schools here. I grew up here and am a product of the wonderful Clark County school district, so I know firsthand that they are great. I for one loved that almost a third of my fellow classmates wouldn't be getting a diploma because this meant I was going to have a leg up on them when I applied for my first low-paying, service indusrty job. It was also great to go to school each day and see so many of my fellow classmates getting an early start on what is most important, a family. Another thing I love is the many neighborhood bars and casinos. Since it is too hot for parks, we get what really matters to a community, multiple bars. This way I know that I can drink and gamble really close to home, making the drunken drive home or to Walmart much easier to swallow. Having so many neighborhood casinos is the best part though. This way I can see a movie, eat a meal, and gamble part of my hard-earned pay check. If I lose track of time and spend a little too much, no worries because I know there are several nearby check cashing places where I can get a nice high interest loan. I agree with everyone else, if you don't like it here, or can't say something nice, then do us all a favor and leave. We almost have all of the best chains in the country, and I'm tired of hearing you guys rip this place apart. What if some chain like Dunkin' Donuts for example reads your posts and decides not to bring their wonderful donuts here because of all the negativity you spread? You want to eat Winchells for the rest of your life?

cjski21, are you purposely making it a point to live in all of the high crime areas in the country? After Las Vegas, don't forget the Baltimore area, Pittsburg, and Columbus, just to name a few. If you like the west, try Albquerque. I hear they have a crime problem as well.

I do not make it a point. I cannot help that I was born and raised in central Detroit. My time in the Air Force was spent in crappy cities. It's like the governement wanted me to see the worst this country has to offer, and I have. I have never lived in DC or Baltimore but have been there. My first shirt had gotten his rental car stolen there a few years back (SE DC), he got turned around and stopped in a gas station to ask for directions and when he came out, it was gone. His fault though, he is a naive country boy from Nebraska and left it unlocked with the keys in it. Yes LV has problems, but I am going to step out on a limb here and say, again, I can be MUCH worse.
