The true cost of real grass is sneaky. Maintenance, water, lawn chemicals. Female dog urine tends to be very hard on lawns.

The fake turf can look really nice, but with animals it requires extra attention to stay sanitary and odor free. Bleach and other disinfectants are good for keeping the top grass clean but an enzymatic formula is the only thing that will neutralize the smell of urine deep within the underlayment. And even then it's not 100% effective...but it is a vast improvement.

9 out of 10 times I can't smell anything bad. You have to stay on top of the maintenance.

They both have their drawbacks with pets....but even with rocks in a dog run...things begin to stink after a while.

Excellent points!!

Someone mentioned seeding.

Is this a better choice than sod? How to get that resilient grass they have in the parks??

Sod costs more than seeding, but you will have an instant lawn.

I seeded in early spring, used a starter fertilizer then tall fescue grass seed. I reseeded the back half after two months with left over seed because it was a little thin. the lawn looks good now and holds up great to traffic. I water with two five minute cycles twenty minutes apart around 4-5am.

Don't seed in the heat...wait until late September October. Seeding does not work in the heat. You must sod. If you seed than you must stay off it until well established. There are a number of fescue and combinations that are tough and stand use well.

My front lawn of about 1500 SF is fescue and three other things and is quite robust. Part of it is very well shaded and does not do as well as that in full sun.

In the back I use bermuda which goes great in the heat but most be overseeded if you want winter grass. We do it some years and not others. Couple of hundred bucks including labor.

Just keep this in mind especially if you intend to acquire a pet dog or if you have a pet dog, with real turf, a freshly mowed grass smells better and will grow back compared to a stale stinking plastic turf that gets worn out over time with dog urine/feces.

Actually, the best time to seed [according to Lin Mills and a couple of nurserys] is in December....seed and spread Bullcrap....and water every day....slower to start but apparantly yields a better root system.

Aren't they talking about winter rye over-seeding for when your regular lawn goes dormant? Or am I behind the times? Haven't had a lawn in years.
