I think I'm missing your point...?

At night, all lit up, the strip is beautiful. The end. No political problems, no corruption, no rats, no iron skeletons....... Its just a beautiful scene.

Sometimes you have to take a step back and admire it, without all of the distractions.

The Strip is my "bad weather" go-to. When its 120 outside, or too cold in the winter, I pick a mall/casino on the strip, and go for a walk. I don't usually "vacation" down there. If I want to go hang out for the evening, its usually the Red Rock. Its "Strip" quality, with away from the strip quantity (of people).

I have encountered folks who normally would not have gone to Las Vegas now wanting to have that experience, so this might explain why traffic is up, and many are newbies, so their spending is a bit down this trip. Not a one who has come back complained and they all plan another trip with more people they know. Their one day trips or weekend get away to the local casinos will be less. All of these people agree Las Vegas is above the other casinos and the locations they are at. So it appears many folks are planning to come out more often hopefully it will induce more growth for Las Vegas and bring the economy back in the right direction. Please do not count out the folks who now see how nice it is to retire to the Las Vegas area from their trips or vacations they have taken. Thanks for keeping us posted on the positive signs that appear Las Vegas needs that.
Good point. There is illegal gambling going on in every city and town in this country ...probably the world. So legalizing it in other states doesn't take anything away from Las Vegas, a world class resort city. It takes it out of the back of the pool rooms, and puts it out where it can be regulated. I doubt if legalizing anything that goes on under the table anyway ever creates more use. But, Las Vegas is still the big leagues, and everybody wants to come here even if they don't gamble (or even if they won't admit it in public).

If prostitution is the oldest profession, gambling is the second oldest. Some cave woman offered Ally Oop sex for a mastodon steak, and somebody else bet a clam shell he couldn't catch one. Or, as the wife said about her husband's roving eye, "I don't care where he gets his appetite as long as he only eats at home." Those slot joints in other states probably do remind people that they would have a whole lot more fun losing their money in Las Vegas than in Podunk. And they probably get better odds here.

To present nothing but positives would paint an untrue picture of Las Vegas...like any other city, there are positives AND negatives to each area, and they should both be represented here.

Most people who have vacationed in your great city, have misconceptions that living would be like vacation, 365 days per year. The LV residents seem fine to let those misconceptions ride in the wave of new residents to benefit them and their area. It is a disservice to future residents to present only the positives...just as it would be to present only the negatives.
Oralé.

But I, and most people I talk to that have been here most of their lives, would personally have been happier if no one had moved here in the past 40 years, and that the Mob still ran the casinos. We just all have an explainable compulsion to defend this town even when it makes it attractive to people wanting to move here. Crazy ain't it?

Its a very slow process, but it looks like the light is shining though. Crooked politicians are being recalled, absurd bills are being voted down in the only places where they could possible pass (Mississippi voting down the abortion bill.. If it didn't pass in the deep south/bible-belt, where else can it pass?).

Good or bad, I really fee like we are at the dawn of a new time in this country, and maybe the world. Our generation will be in the history books (Except in Texas, they make up history as they go)
I'm just surprised it took so long. Apathy maybe?

There are people living here that claim they never go to the Strip, but I'm sure there are people living in Anaheim that claim they never go to Disneyland. Different strokes. Most of us that do not work on the Strip only go when there is something specific we want to see or do, and when we have visitors. Because of 40 million tourists visiting the Strip each year, it is sort of a pain in the arse for us to fight the congestion. But we go. We just can't spend all our time there. Don't forget there are thousands of locals who work on the Strip, and downtown, and in neighborhood casinos, so they spend a lot more time there even on their off time.

It's a billion-dollar view, for sure, and one that everyone should witness first-hand, at least once in their lives. The only thing I've ever seen that has come close to the wonder of the LV lights, might be Times Square in NYC, which is second to the LV lights, and should also be viewed at least once in eveyone's lifetime.

My point was this...most residents here have posted how it annoys them that most of the world views the city of Las Vegas as just The Strip. And for some reason, residents also seem not to want to even admit that they visit the The Strip on a regular basis. I've heard things like..."The Strip is for the tourists" and "I only go there when I have vistors from out-of-town staying with me"...or perhaps they just don't want to give the appearance of always gambling...not sure what it is? Yet, when it comes to showing off where they live...many times it's a view of...guess where?...The Strip! It's like a love-hate relationship that residents have with The Strip.

Let's face it, The Strip is to Las Vegas what Disney World is to Orlando. It's just a separate tourist area that draws in the money to make some corporation(s) and their stockholders rich, which in turn, also benefits the independent businesses and residents alike, as that money trickles down from those visitors. The Strip businesses are the biggest employer in the area, just as Disney World is in Orlando. The Las Vegas economy is dependent on The Strip just as Orlando's economy is dependent on Disney World. Orlando also has a downtown, and nice areas with nice houses, just as Las Vegas does. Sprawl development and nice weather exists in both places.

I think your point about that picture posted by Von was something to the fact that, no matter what, you're happy to live in a city that's as beautiful as...[The Strip]. Those in Orlando might also be proud of the beauty of their city...yet I doubt you'd be shown pictures of Cinderella's Castle or the EPCOT globe to be representative of that. The Strip, and Disney World, are just tourist zones that provide the money (and the reason) for the infrastucture of the rest of the real city to exist. You are truly fortunate to make use of that resource, that exists so close to your real (residential) city, just as the Orlando residents are who buy their yearly discounted local season passes to Disney World.

No. Use of the word "Most" here is wildly inappropriate. I think a small moronic minority of the people who've vacationed here have the misconception that it's a 24/7 party for locals. Some subset of that crowd inevitably posts downright stupid things on online forums. Correcting those people is fine - they're, quite simply, idiots.

The problem is going out of one's way to over-represent negativity in order to combat the false notion that Most vacationers have the above noted misconception.

Great post, and thank you for clarifying.

I think the 2 things are different though....Disneyland and the Strip.

Nobody would call Disneyland "Orlando". Its something entirely different, that just happens to exist in Orlando. It could exist in any city, and still be Disneyland.

The comparison with NY and Time Square is a good one though...but it defeats your argument

Time Square IS New York. It can't and doesn't exist anywhere else. Same for the Strip. The Strip IS Las Vegas. I don't know of anyone that gets upset when a picture of the Strip is called "Las Vegas".

Like it or not, the Strip is the only reason we are all here. In some form or another, you work for the Strip. You change oil at Jiffy Lube? You're changing the oil on someone's car who works on the Strip. I can see getting angry over the assumption that all of Las Vegas has the Strip lifestyle. Strip clubs on every corner. Prostitution "newsstands" on every block. That mentality bugs me too. But as for the "view" of the strip, its our city, and in that moment in time, for that picture, its perfect.

A picture says 1,000 words, and when I look at this pic, in those 1,000 words, not one of them is "dirty, stripclub, drugs, rats....etc etc".

Just like when I look at this picture, I don't think about homeless people, rats, muggings....etc....

Every city with a massive population of people in a relatively small area will have its share of problems....But that doesn't make it any less awe inspiring.
