I don't think I have ever eaten in a restaurant in Mexico. Why would I when the food that is made by my in-laws and their extended family is always so awesome. Many Mexican restaurants in So Cal are close to what is served up by family members in their home on a regular basis. Places like El Tepeyac can't be touched when it comes to great Mexican food.

All the "Mexican Food" in Vegas is the same touristy, bland, flavorless slop. I can't even get a decent bowl of albondagas soup in Vegas. Most places don't even have it on the menu. And if you can't make a tasty bowl of vegetable soup and drop a flavorful meatball in the middle of it, than something is definitely wrong, let alone trying to make pasole that tastes anything close to authentic.

One of the problems is there is not one Mexican cuisine. There simply is little in common between say Ensenada and Nayarit...and Jalisco is yet another. We had a Mexican friend who does authentic and spicy Jalisco cooking. Starving to death. Gringos find the cuisine too potent.

For standard stuff including a great macaroni soup try the Burrito Inn at Del Webb and Rampart. The Admiral goes for Lindo Michoacan. Which I think pretty nice for conventional Mexican.

Lived in Boston since the early 80s? Did you ever try the Forest Cafe? I've lived in Utah, So. California, and Massachusetts and I thought the Forest Cafe served some of the best authentic Mexican food I've ever eaten.

"Forest Café did not always serve what food critics once called some of the most authentic Mexican dishes on the East Coast."

"...Fahey traveled to Mexico, where he went into houses and restaurants to learn how to make the dishes he served."

Just drove through Vegas on a trip to Surprise, AZ. Had the best Heuvos Rancheros at the Southwest dinner in Boulder. We all have our opinions, but prior to this my favorite was El Faro in South San Francisco.

Garduno's (with locations at the Palms and Fiesta Rancho) is worth a visit.
Garduno's at the Palms has closed, replaced by one of those places that serves $18 hamburgers. No, thanks.

No surprise in Surprise. Just took a car down for my mom to drive.
That 40 freeway where you live was the roughest.
Next time you go across the bridge in Nevada, and climb the new road to the intersection where Von's is? Turn left for two blocks and it's on the right. For a place that serves Americana, and Mexican as a side it was good.

Totally agree..Just as there are many different areas of the US for food there are as many in Mexico.. I love Sopapiallas but cannot find any in the western part of the US.. BUT in TX/NM they are everywhere...

Had relavites who moved from SoCal to Dallas and they lamented missing the Mexican food in California.....
