1. I wish I knew how many people smoked cigarettes in Las Vegas.

2. I wish I knew how hard it would be to find a job in Las Vegas.

3. I wish I knew how transient people were (and neighbors do not speak to one another) in Las Vegas.

4. I wish I knew how much dire poverty (and disproportionate social inequality) there is in Las Vegas. ***

5. I wish I knew how many people describe themselves as being "stuck" here and would give anything to move away.

6. I wish I knew how many DUI accidents there are in Las Vegas.

7. I wish I knew how many young children speak with profanity in Las Vegas.

8. I wish I knew how friendly the people are, yet they still mind their own business in Las Vegas (for me, this is great!).

9. I wish I knew about the flash floods in Las Vegas.

10. I wish I knew that education (especially higher education) is not valued in Las Vegas.

11. I wish I knew how beautiful the sunsets were and how much peace I would find in the desert.

12. I wish I knew how many officer involved shootings there are in Las Vegas (and how each one can be "justifiable").

13. I wish I knew how much talking and how little action public officials in Las Vegas do.

14. I wish I knew how much people pollute and do not recycle in Las Vegas.

15. I wish I knew that I would strongly consider becoming Mormon in Las Vegas.

16. I wish I knew that I would purposely take public transit because I am scared to drive in Las Vegas (only to find an increase in pedestrian accidents once I did).

17. I wish I knew how scant the "customer service skills" are with "some" workers in Las Vegas.

18. I wish I knew how many friends & relatives would come visit just because I live in Las Vegas.

19. I wish I knew how much better the black & white race relations are in Las Vegas, juxtaposed to where I moved from.

20. I wish I knew that not all universities are created equal and that UNLV is considered to be a lower ranking institution.

To the OP, this was big fun for me and a positive way to exercise my creative mind!!!

Sounds like you didn't know anything about this town before moving here.

...yes, I will concede that you are correct about that.

I don't understand. You say this as if it were a bad thing.

Actually UNLV has perhaps the finest College of Hotel Administration in the country -- better even than Cornell University's (and for those who don't recognize it, Cornell University is an Ivy League school in New York).

They're also A-1 in the world when it comes to gambling research.

Noticing a pattern yet?

But their mathematics department isn't particularly well regarded. Go figure. You would think we would have the best probability and statistics department in the world.

Like other people here have said in different threads, employment was a lot harder to come by than I expected considering Vegas was a boom town.

Here are the things I wished I knew back in 2004:

1. The dominance of the LDS church in certain aspects of the town (at least back then)
2. How hard it would be to find a job
3. How low the wages would be compared to where I came from
4. How stupid it was to move 1500 miles away with no source of income
5. How much I would miss my family back home
6. I had no plan and no clue about what Vegas was like or what I would do once I got there

If we come back this year or next, here is what will be different:

1. I will have a job waiting for me in my new field (teaching), which I trained for after leaving Vegas
2. We will have two incomes not just one which will make the financial situation much, much better
3. I will regularly travel back home to see my family and will have the means to do so
4. I will have an actual plan and will know what I am in for (to an extent)

Just out of curiosity, can anyone tell me how the LDS church affects the town?

In my opinion, not in any sort of highly influential way. I've lived in areas of Idaho and Utah where the LDS population was concentrated, and rather insular, but I haven't seen that here.

They will send their brats out to knock on your door to try to convert you though.
