There are some very informative threads on this topic already. They should not be hard to find. But overall, COX usually always wins.

They are all too expensive! I signed up with Centurylink in January for $134.00/month for extented cable/HD/Extra box/phone/internet because Cox wanted to raise it to $174.00 a month. Cox is better but I wasn't paying $174.00 + taxes and fees a month. Centurylink is a 2 year committment, a one year contract and no price increases for two years. Before the two years is up, I hope to have researched a much cheaper option using a web tv, Hulu and Netflix.

antenna + (netflix or hulu or other subscription) > cable or dish tv. You will need an internet provider. (We currently have Cox). But unless you simply cannot live without 567 news channels or live sports not available on NBC, ABC, CBS or Fox, paying for cable/dish tv is a very big economic mistake.

If TV is all you need, DISH is the best value by far - perhaps $70 a month for 200 channels, a DVR, multiple sets, etc.

I haven't had a landline phone for over a decade, and I use a Clear WiMax dongle on my computer for broadband internet, so I don't have to deal with cable companies.

They're still in business?!

I gave Clear a shot - twice. The first time, it was right when they launched. A friend I played poker with worked for them, and got us in a few days before it was available to the general public. The second time, it was a year or two later, and I thought that maybe it had gotten better.

Nope.

Very spotty and inconsistent reliability and speed (unless you live right under one of their antennas), and using their modem device, you couldn't get a public IP directly assigned to your device. Their box acted as a router, and you had zero ability to configure it. The USB dongle didn't have this limitation, but for our needs (business use), it was absolutely terrible. They shouldn't even offer "business" service - there is literally no functional or technical difference between their "home" and "business" service. The only difference is the name of the package.

Their tech support is nothing more than a bunch of scripted idiots that have no understanding of networking whatsoever. Prior to trying them a second time, I spoke with their tech support people to get answers to some specific networking questions. I had to explain public vs. private IP space, and what a CIDR block was to this "technician." He put me on hold and came back after a few minutes and assured that they could do what I required. Surprise! They couldn't. Again, they couldn't even provide me with a static IP address, and there is no way to not have their box doing NAT. Both of those things are absolutely unacceptable for business class service.

I wanted to like them. Really, I did. I love the idea of wireless broadband, but their product is simply terrible. I'm glad that it works for you and that you're (apparently) happy with it, but I tried them twice, and both times, they failed miserably. I would never recommend them to anyone, and will actively dissuade people from trying them anytime I see their name pop up.
