I have a relative who is going to be in the job market after this current school year. So I ask what kind of jobs are available for a new to life 18 year old? I know about the fast food route I mean long term with a decent benefit package. What do the youth who don't attend college do after high school in Vegas?

Oh yes it's a male so the pole isn't an option. Not saying it's an option for anyone but just fending it off.

Costco. Very competitive due to pay, benefits, and the fact that they only promote within. Still, best non-degree option IMO.

I would say food service at a chain or a local restaurant off-strip. I understand you have to be 21 to be a server here in LV, but perhaps a host position? Let him get a few years of experience and see if he can get a job on the strip.

City of LV/ City of Henderson/ Clark County/ Library all hire young adults for various types of jobs. Could also look into joining military or some type of law enforcement agency.

But in my opinion, i think it's best that the young person experience how crappy life can be working at low paying / dead end jobs ; perhaps they can get motivated to seek vocational training and/or go to college. Not saying that you need college to succeed in life, but having some type of skill can go a long way towards a lifetime of higher earning.

How fast can he run? Does he have a driver's license. Valet parker material? Does anyone in his family have good connections?

Starbucks is one of the only companies that offer health insurance for part time workers.

He can try Zappos, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc.

No license yet. Costco sounds like a good long term bet. Has anyone joined any of the unions such as labors union if there is one?

Sit your relative down and break it down for him. If he wants to live in Las Vegas and doesn't have a useful degree, then he needs to break in at any major casino, any position, and start working his way up, over, sideways, and up, until he's doing what he wants.

If he's 18 and good looking, I'd steer him to front of the house -- busser and then barback on his 21st birthday. Go the bartending route.

Very Very hard to get in.. always starts seasonal... I know the manager at the N Decatur Costco... only 1 seasonal person made it to stay...

Good pay.. but i still wouldn't want to be a cashier at a company after 10 years like alot of them...
