I noticed it gets a few degrees warmer in southern highlands than summerlin. Not sure if it's due to elevation or that short distance further south.

Shade.

My aunt doesn't get as much sun because she's right up against the Spring Mountains. It's often 20 degrees cooler at her house than it is at mine. And her garden is much, much nicer.

And come winter, with some merciless winds howling thru the valley, temps dropping to the low 30's at night, I'll be 5 degrees warmer on the Valley floor!

Part of Anthem can go up to 3250 feet, 1000 feet higher than the Valley floor where I live, no thanks!

When I'm freezing in winter near DI/Pecos, I think of the poor souls living up in those higher reaches of Anthem, and Summerlin! Brrr.......

Actually, it's the other way around. The lower parts of the valley are colder in winter because cold air, being heavier, sinks into lower areas.

I've asked two weathermen to explain to me why it wouldn't be the same way in summer, and I got replies that only Albert Einstein could understand.

But lower parts of the valley are warmer in summer and colder in winter by about an average of five to ten degrees. That's one reason Lake Mead is always a lot hotter or colder depending on time of year.

I would also take another look at your height above sea level figures. Not sure Anthem gets up to 3200. The Strip is roughly 2,000 ft elevation. Alexander and Durango area is about 2400-2500. Boulder Highway is only about 1500 ft. Around Nellis would be the lowest elevation. I have not checked the Lone Mountain area.

We live on more of a series of alluvial fans than in a valley.

Over several decades, many parts of the city, like downtown, and the Strip, has subsided several feet due to pumping water from the aquifer underneath.

This makes no sense to me at all!

Phoenix is at 1100 feet, we're at 2165, and it's usually 5-10 degrees warmer down there any time of the year. Bullhead City/Laughlin is at 700 feet, and to warm up a bit in winter, you go down there, or to Havasu at 550 feet! A teensy bit warmer!

No matter what time of the year, if I go to Flagstaff at 7000 feet, I take a coat along!

I always thought altitude was the name of the game in the West/Southwest!
