I've taken the bus in many large cities, although none of the ones that you have listed. With the summer heat, the bad infrastructure, the constant stopping, and the tweaker passengers, Las Vegas is my least-favorite city to use public transportation.

But what do you expect from a city that can't even attach their monorail to their nearby airport. It seems that everything involving public transportation in this city is done so as to make the cabbies happy.

This is so true...However most cabbies don't even know how to get anywhere off the strip! You end up giving them directions half the time! . I have little respect for most cabbies in Vegas due to their extreme lack of knowledge.

While I won't argue that public transit in Vegas still sucks compared to Europe, Asia, NYC etc, and that the Monorail remains a disaster, the bus system has gotten a lot better in recent years.

I remember when I first moved to Vegas in 2001 and the buses wouldn't even follow a schedule, never mind show up on time. Now we have the double decker on main thorough fares, like Flamingo, and it runs very regularly and on time for the most part.

With that said, driving is unquestionably the way to go here.

I am really impressed with the bus system here. The number of routes and coverage of the valley is outstanding. Most people do not realize how large it is.

Living in NYC, I can tell you that crime happens on our transit system, although its much better than it used to be.

The big difference in LV? The heat? In the norther cities, you can usually find some way to keep warm in the winter waiting for the bus. In Vegas, you can only take so much of your clothing off.

Ok I am reading that post and would like to add I will be living on about 4000 a month and need dog friendly places. Will be helping out the kids until they get on their feet and get through school but we should be able to.do this with there putting in also. Would rather be able to get to a good gym and a city pool for laps or have my own pool. I still don't know how that works in the desert must be too expensive and feel kind of guilty for asking. Love lve urban life but then bei out in a smaller area isn't too bad either especially for the pets but the best thing is being able to get up and with a free day walk some ways and find all you would need. Of course people watching is great
Hoping for some good input

OK, here is my attempt at providing you some information that might be helpful to you.

1) Do you already own a reliable car? If you do not already own a car, buy a good, reliable used car with good air conditioning. Prior to moving here, have the AC serviced.

2) Once you move here, you must have your vehicle registered with the Nevada DMV within 30 days even though you might have valid tags on your vehicle that last many more months.

3) Do not plan to rely upon public transportation. It may work out, but do not make your plan based on it.

4) You mention Nellis AFB, but you do not mention why. If you are commuting to Ellis, then it makes sense for you to look for an easy commute. If you need to go to Nellis only every now and then rather than a daily commute, then you have more options insofar as location are concerned.

5) You want to rent for a year before buying - this makes sense to me given that you do not really know the area. Do you want to rent a house or rent an apartment/condo? Let's say you want to rent a house. What size?

6) I personally live way down in the southern end -- 10 minutes from the M casino & I-15, which is about as far away from Nellis as you can get. So, while there are some very nice neighborhoods here, it is so far from Nellis that you probably wouldn't be interested in these neighborhoods.

7) I defer to many of the people who post here who have 1st hand knowledge, but in general, I'd say start your search around the Centennial Hills area

I would be renting a house. Bigger but bigger is only about 1800 to 2000 sq feet. With a pool hopefully. Nellis is important because some food shopping and I am not sure if the medical would be there or not. probably. I both have a reliable car. I was looking into Centennial Hills for a place to rent. I hear it is a little cooler then other place as in 10 - 15 degrees and safe. I am not sure what the difference between lake las vegas and the centennial hill area is.
